Collapsible soil hazard mapping along the Wasatch Range, Utah, USA Owens, R L; Rollins. K M Proc 6th International Congress International Association of Engineering Geology, Amsterdam, 6-10 August 1990 VI, P221-227. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema. 1990 Collapsible soils, common is arid or semi-arid areas, are dry, low density soils that decrease in volume when they become wet. They led to significant damage to structures along the southern Wasatch range, due to water introduced by man's activities. A study aimed at producing a collapsible soil hazard map for this region was conducted. Description of collapsible soils, the geologic environments of the area, and the details of the development of a collapsible soil hazard map are presented. 913276
Results of the pilot study of Ingeokaart Amsterdam Philippart, M A Proc 6th International Congress International Association of Engineering Geology, Amsterdam, 6-10 August 1990 V I , P229-234. Publ Rotterdam: A ,4 Balkema. 1990 A collaborative project to provide engineering geology maps of Amsterdam for management and planning purposes is underway. Initial study of two areas, each about 4 sq kin, is described. One area is in the city centre and is well documented, the other is on the outskirts and little information is available. Data from Dutch cone soundings, boreholes, cores, laboratory tests, and water table measurements, largely provided by the city authorities, have been used in manual production of maps at I:10000 scale.

Evaluation of suitability of the North Armenia territories for major construction works Strizhelchik, G G Proc 6th International Congress International Association of Engineering Geology, Amsterdam, 6-10 August 1990 V I . P253-255. Publ Rotterdam." A A Balkema, 1990 A study was conducted in the aftermath of the earthquake in Speatak in order to assess the viability of increasing earthquake resistance of structures and to evaluate the suitability of some developed land for major construction works. Data were collected in order to assess seismic activities and establish limit values for local factors leading to seismic activities. The area was then categorised into subareas according to their suitability for major construction works.
913280 Engineering geological mapping for urban planning in developing countries van Schalkwyk, A; Price, G V Proc 6th International Congress International Association of Engineering Geology, Amsterdam, 6-10 August 1990 VI. P257-264. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1990 Rapid population growth in developing countries necessitates infrastructure and housing development in urban areas. Such developments require a good understanding of local geological conditions. Engineering geological mapping has been shown to provide geological information that can be used for regional planning, proper land use, and choice of investment siting. The application of aerial photographs in engineering geology mapping and assessment of geological factors arc discussed.

Large-scale engineering geological mapping in the Spanish Pyrenees Rengers. N: Soeters. R: van Riet, P A L M: Vlasblom, E Proc 6th International Congress International Association of Engineering Geology, Amsterdam, 6-10 August 1990 VI, P235-243. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1990 Maps prepared over a period of years are presented. The basic technique involves mapping terrain units by large scale aerial photography and subsequent interactive description of the units in the terrain on the basis of field data. Photo interpretation of rock and soil units and areas subject to mass movement or erosion is described. These data are superimposed on existing geological maps using photo overlays. 913278
Analytical photogrammetry for measurement and plotting of steep rock slopes Rengers, N; Weir, M; Rosingh. J W Proc 6th International Congress International Association of Engineering Geology, Amsterdam, 6-10 August 1990 VI, P245-252. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1990 PC based photogrammetric equipment is described. System principles are outlined, and applications using aerial and terrestial photography of steep slopes and suitable metric and non-metric cameras are illustrated. Accuracy of point measurements is discussed. The example of a plan of a steep rock face is presented.
Mountain hazard analysis using a PC-based GIS van Westen, C J; Bonilla, J B A Proc 6th International Congress International Association of Engineering Geology, Amsterdam, 6-10 August 1990 VI. P265-271. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema. 1990 The application of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in earth sciences is beginning to be recognised as a very powerful tool. Crucial to this tool are the methodologies for data capture and data input. Unlike conventional mapping techniques, GIS require different data formats for producing different map types. The application of GIS based on a personal computer for assessment of mountain hazards is presented.
913282 Geotechnical mapping: a basic document to urban planning Zuquette, L V; Gandolfi, N Proc 6th International Congress International Association of Engineering Geology, Amsterdam, 6-10 August 1990 V I, P273-278. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1990 In order to achieve organised occupancy of the earth's surface and make better utilization of its environment, planning is essential. Geotechnical mapping can be uged to assist in both urban and regional planning. Different parameters including rock types, soils, and groundwater flow can be indicated on geotechnical maps. The utilisation of geotechnical maps in planning is discussed.
