Multi-purpose tool To meet the needs of safety and rescue workers, the portable and convertible SK.7 and SK.5 multipurpose tools have been developed. They can be used in turn as a spade, pick and hoe, and then with the blade of the spade withdrawn, as a pick, axe and shear (model SK.5) together with nail pliers and a bottle-opener (model SK.7). The tool is all-metal, with the various parts in grades of high strength steel The two models are low in weight and compact: SK.7: weight 1.250 kg, length folded 48 cm, length extended 62 cm; SK.5 : weight 2"600 kg, length folded 73 cm, length extended 90 cm. Ground proximity warning system A Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS), for commercial airliners, has been developed by Plessey Aerospace. This development is in response to the Federal Aviation Authority ruling requiring that all US registered turbine powered aircraft are fitted with such equipment by 1 December, 1975. Similar legislation is expected to be introduced by the UK Civil Aviation Authority during 1976. Plessey has designed a unit which is said to possess considerable technical advances over other existing systems. The GPWS gives visual and aural warning of potentially hazardous flight conditions which, ff uncorrected, could lead to a crash. These conditions are: excessive sink rate, excessive closure rate, negative climb or loss of height after take off, inadvertent proximity to ground, and inadvertent "duck under" glide slope.

Revising the American Standard for the handicapped According to ANSI Reporter, work is underway to replace the current American National Standard for making buildings accessible to the physically handicapped with a new and expanded version that will cover residential as well as public buildings. The research required for development of such a standard will be conducted by the University of Syracuse under a $256 000 contract awarded to it by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. HUD plans to apply the resulting standard to single- and multifamily dwellings financed under Federal Housing Administration-insured loans. The existing American National Standard A117.1-1961 (R1971),

The audible warning consists of a synthesized voice giving an imperative warning together with the command "Climb" or "Pull up", according to customer preference. This is accompanied by a continuously flashing captioned light. The audio warning is delivered either through the flight deck loudspeaker or the audio system. Both warnings continue until the hazardous situation has passed.
