FOCUS and distribution. The company also operates in Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil. Other traders include Possehl Inc, which hopes to ship some 18-200,000 tonnes in 2004 from various Chinese producers that cater to the Latin American detergent market. The European natural sodium sulfate industry is strong in Spain, which has an output of 1.1 M tonnes/y. By-product materials from various sources contribute another 1 M tonnes/y in the European market. The detergent industry remains the primary market in the region, accounting for 70-80% of consumption. The rising sales of supermarket ownlabel detergent products are also propelling growth in the industry, following a low point in 2000/2001. Industrial Minerals, Dec 2004, (447), 40,43
Multiple enzymes in laundry detergents Adding enzymes to laundry detergent provides consumers with a cleaner wash, but it also offers unique opportunities for manufacturers in the marketplace. Enzyme detergents now dominate the laundry detergent market in large parts of the world. In North America and Europe, for example, between 80-90% of detergents contain at least one enzyme. The addition of a unique blend of enzymes to a detergent product can provide product differentiation. The most successful brands have variously combined proteases with amylases, lipases with cellulases, to delivery a high standard of cleaning performance. Use of enzymes also means that washing temperatures can be reduced, with consequent savings for the consumer. The particular blend of enzymes used varies because geographical differences in washing conditions such as water temperature and hardness influence the activity of the enzymes. SDA responds to ‘false alarm’ on antibacterial An activist group’s report attacking a major antibacterial ingredient used in some consumer products is nothing more than a ‘false alarm’ according to The Soap and Detergent Association (SDA). SDA was responding to a statement issued by the activist group Beyond Pesticides concerning use of the ingredient triclosan. SDA rebutted the group’s claims that triclosan promotes antibiotic resistance and poses other health risks [see also Focus on Surfactants, Jan 2005, p. 5]. Riding the ‘exotic’ wave: oils and fats for cosmetics About 10,000 tonne/y of vegetable oils and fats are used in personal care products and cosmetics, a small amount when compared with mineral oils (ca. 200,000 tonne/y), silicones and ester oils (more than 100,000 tonne/y). The common vegetable oils are those from palm, coconut, rapeseed, soybean and sunflower, but there is an increasing long-term trend towards the use of more ‘exotic’ products such as shea and cocoa butters and ‘Amazon’ oils. The total market worldwide for these products is around a few thousand tonne/y. Cognis Care Chemicals has a facility in Brazil to produce Amazon oils and has been awarded the Ibama certificate which confirms that it cooperates in improving the social and economic conditions of traditional communities. Croda Chemicals has recently added maracuja oil to its range. Extracted from the passion fruit plant, maracuja oil contains natural anti-inflammatory chemicals. Karlshamns of Sweden has
