Joan-CariesSuris,MD,MPH;NtiriaParer%MD,Ph.D.;ConxitaPuig,MD.AdolescentUnit, InstitutUniversitariDexeus,Barcelona,Catalonia,Spain. ~CT~: to assesswhetheradolescentsons and daughtersof divorcedparentswere morelikelyto engagein riskybehaviorsthanthoselivingin intactfhmilies. ~: data from the BarcelonaAdolescentHealthDatabase(a surveyconductedin 1993 among a random sample of 14-19 year olds high-schoolstudents of the city of Barcelona,Spain)wereused. Intactgroupincluded2742adolescents(53.8%of females)and Divorced group 272 (54.4V0of females). Groups were comparedon drug use (tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, other illicit drugs),sexuality(intercourse, age at sexual debut, use of a reliablecontraceptivemethod, havinghad fouror moresexualpartners),and vehicle-related behaviors(useof seatbelt, use of helmet, drivingwhileintoxicated, ridingwithan intoxicated driver).Chi-squareandstudent’st testswereusedfor intergroupcomparisons.Criterionvalue was set at 0.05. ~: Therewere no age or genderdifferencesbetweengroups.Adolescentsin the Divorcedgroupwere more likelyto have ever tried tobacco(80%vs. 70%),cannabis(29% vs. 160/0),or other drugs(190/ovs. 8°A)but not alcohol(85°/0vs. 820/0).Adolescentsin the Divorcedgroupwere also more likelyto be sexuallyactive(21V0vs. 127.),and to have had fouror morepartners(12% vs. s~o), but no differenceswerefoundfor age at first intercourse (14.9 vs. 15.7 years) or using a reliable contraceptivemethod (86% in both groups). No differencesrelatedto use of seat belt (52~0 vs. 57~0), helmet(53%vs. 48%), drivingwhile intoxicated(30°/0 vs. 26°/0)or ridingwithan intoxicateddriver(34°/0 vs. 3 1°/0)werefound. ~~: Childrenof divorcedparentsare significantlymore likelyto use drugs (butnot alcohol),to be sexuallyactive, andto havemultiplesexualpartners(althoughmostof them use a reliablecontraceptivemethod). No differencesin vehicle-relatedbehaviorswere found.Healthprofessionalsshouldbe awareof it and giveanticipatoryguidancewith special emphasison druguseto this specificgroupof patients.

Socioeconomic StatusAnd Sexual Risk Behaviors Among US Adolescents John Santelli, MD, MPH,RichardLowry,MD, NancyBrener,PhD,LeahRobin,PhD,CDC,Atlanta,GA OBJECTIVE: To assessthe influenceof socioeconomicstatus(SES)on sexualbehaviorsfor teens 14-17years. Whilepovertyis a potentriskfactorlmarkerfor adolescentpregnancyandacquisition of sexuallytransmitteddiseases, lessis knownaboutthe impactof povertyon sexualbehaviors. DESIGN: The 1992YRBSsupplementto theNationalHealthInterviewSurveyprovidesnationally representativedatafromhouseholdadultsontwomeasuresof SES:householdincomeand educationalattainmentof theparentor otherresponsibleadult, anda descriptionof familystructure. Adolescents(n=3,965)wereinterviewedusingaudioheadsets.Logisticregressionin SUDAANwas usedto definethe independentinfluenceof SES,familystructure, age, andracelethnicityon key sexualbehaviors. RESULTS: Aftercontrollingforparentaleducation, householdincomewasnot relatedto any sexualbehavior.Forbothmalesandfemales, parentaleducationwasassociatedwitheverhaving sexualintercourse,currentabstinence(past3 months),andcondomuse, evenaftercontrollingfor familystructure,age,andrace/ethnicity.Parentaleducationwasnot independentlyrelatedto multiplepartnersinthe past3 monthsor oralcontraceptiveuse. Familystructure(2 parent household)wasrelatedto everhavingintercourseandcurrentabstinenceforfemalesbut onlyto ever havingintercoursefor males. Lowerparentaleducation, olderage, andblackraceincreasedthe probabilityof everhavingsexual intercourse, for malesandfemales. Livingin a 2 parentfamilydecreasedthis probability. Adjustmentfor parentaleducationandfamilystructurereducedbutdidnot eliminatethe influenceof race/ethnicity.Amongfemales,the probabilityof everhavingintercoursedecreasedfrom 56°/0 amongthosewhoseparentsdidnotgraduatefromhighschoolto 29°/0 amongthosewithparentswho hadgraduatedfromcollege. Formales,intercoursedecreasedfrom60Y0to qq~.. CONCLUSIONS: SEShada differentialimpacton keyadolescentsexualbehaviors.Parental educationalattainmentwasmorestronglyassociatedwithsexualbehaviorsthanwas household income. Differencesinadolescentsexualbehaviorby SESarenot largeenoughto explain differencesin pregnancyandSTDrates, suggestingthe influenceof additionalfactorssuchas access to healthservices.
