Engineering Information Abstracts (Part II) substantially better than that of the discriminant model. Although the Type I misclassification rate was slightly greater and the overall misclassification rate was only slightly less, the CBR model was preferred when costs of misclassification were considered. Nevertheless statistical methods can be successfully applied to failure data. This paper presents an approach which allows the detection of unreliable software components and the comparison of the reliability of different software versions - even if testing is done in a classical manner. A simple to use graphical method - which is mainly based on the sequential test of Wald is described. The methodology was successfully applied to a software system for tax consultants. Fieldbus based control systems communicate not only process variables, but also lots of non-control information. Detailed device self-diagnostics and automatic failure alarms enables quick determination if a process problem is due to the sensor or not, without having to do several field visits. The time that can be saved by not having to bring only a few transmitters in to the workshop is enormous. Wear and tear data, exceeded operating conditions or other abnormal behaviour information may be used for predictive maintenance scheduling minimizing costly unscheduled downtime. Field instrument management software will complement the basic process control function and reduces paper work and enables automatic record keeping and documentation of configuration, calibration and maintenance. This is an important feature to help comply with ISO9000 and ISO14000 and other quality and environmental management system requirements for updated and traceable records. Fieldbus helps companies increase productivity, flexibility, quality and comply with ever more stringent environmental regulations, and at the same time lower their operating cost. Fieldbus is the means whereby companies will stay competitive well into the 21 st century. ŽAuthor abstract . 6 Refs. ISA, Research Triangle Park, NC, USA. p 185-194 CODEN: 002744 ISSN: 1054-0032 Publication Year: 1997 Abstract: Software is becoming an increasingly important and troublesome component of a wide array of systems. One consequence is that problems in managing software development and maintenance are increasingly driving engineering management. The capability maturity model for software is one of the most widely used approaches for addressing software process improvement. The model briefly described in this paper is the CMM along with data collected in collaboration with 13 organizations, showing improvements in productivity, quality, and time to market as well as overall business value of this approach to software process improvement. Further, some scenarios show that software, in most cases, has been developed in an ad hoc manner. This article points out that there are several ways by which these problems can be abated. Two factors motivate this research. First, reuse promises to im-

prove software quality and designer productivity. Second, achieving effective software reuse continues to be inordinately difficult. The Designer’s Associate promotes software reuse by making design artifacts from previous development efforts both readily accessible and reusable. It provides tools to create, retrieve, reuse, adapt, and archive artifacts central to the software design process. An implementation of the Designer’s Associate was constructed to demonstrate the concept and assess its merits. ŽAuthor abstract . 22 Refs. Recently, object-oriented programming became popular. However, traditional procedure-oriented software metrics are not appropriate for the development of an object-oriented software. Some researches of object-oriented software metrics have been proposed. But these articles focus on only one metric that measures a specific characteristic of the object-oriented software. In this paper, we propose a new metric methodology, the data scope complexity, for object-oriented software based on data scope of a program. The data scope complexity can show complexities of multiple features of object-oriented programming at the same time. Also, we quantify and compare object-oriented programming with procedure-oriented programming. ŽAuthor abstract . 15 Refs.
