STRIALNEWS Membranesewagedisinfection project A project to demonstrate the ability of Memcor’s continuous microfiltration technology to disinfect secondary treated sewage without the use of chemicals has been successfully completed at the Blackheath sewage treatment works near Sydney, Australia. The project was undertaken by Memtec Ltd and the Water Board SydneyIllawarra-Blue Mountains. The CMF system installed at Blackheath is claimed to be the world’s first microfiltration disinfection process. The system has been added to an existing trickling filter plant and provides tertiary sewage treatment for a community of 3500 people. Monitoring programme results indicated almost total removal of all suspended solids, regardless of the level in the feed, giving substantial reductions in biochemical oxygen demand (87%),

chemical oxygen demand (78%) and total Kjeldahl nitrogen (73%). Total coliforms, faecal coliforms and faecal streptococci were reduced to geometric means levels of less than 1 cfu/lOO ml and coliphage was reduced to less than 6 pfu/lOO ml. Human virus removal was also extremely efficient with no reovirus, adenovirus or enterovirus found in the filtrate samples. Over the monitoring period, the effluent met all microbiological aspects of the Australian, New South Wales and Victorian guidelines for reclaimed water as well as the EC, Australian and World Health Organisation guidelines for bathing waters. The effluent met the most stringent requirements of the Californian guidelines for reclaimed water in terms of geometric mean. The performance of the

Qualityaward for Nordfab DPE Dust and fume extraction specialist Nordfab DPE has obtained BS 5750 accreditation covering the design, manufacture, installation and servicing of its product range. Presenting the certificate at a ceremony attended by the firm’s employees, Alan C. ‘&ler, Director of Consultancy Services for the Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA), said that the award of BS 5750 was a major achievement. BS 5750 represents the

results of nearly two years’ sustained and exacting work by a team headed by Nordfab DPE’s engineering manager, Paul Stringer, who was appointed the company’s quality manager. Bradford-based Nordfab DPE employs 40 people, and is part of the Danish Nordfab group of companies, with subsidiaries throughout Europe and in the USA. Filtration workshops in Tokyo and Osaka Lutz Bergmann, of US-based Filter Media Consulting Inc, will be conducting two, oneday filtration workshops in Japan in October and November this year. The first will be held 12 October in Tokyo, prior to the Powder Show; the second will be on 4 November, during the TechTextil Asia event in Osaka. 364

Topics to be covered include dry and liquid filtration basics, equipment, fibres, fabrics, non-wovens, filtration applications, market trends and state-of-theart developments. Filter Media Consulting Inc, PO Box 2189, LuGrange, GA 30241, USA. Tel: + 1 706 882 3108, fa: + 1 706 882 3039.

Memcor microfiltration plant was very satisfactory with plant availability exceeding 99%. The membranes have shown a failure rate of less than 2% per annum and analysis of the membranes themselves showed no significant degradation. The gas backwash and membrane cleaning process employed maintained a stable throughput over the five months. The system occupies minimal space and can be installed at existing sewage treatment plants, representing major savings in land acquisition costs. The modular design enables and simple addition of capacity if required and facilitates system design, maintenance and management. RSCaward for chromatography Whatman Scientific has announced that the Royal Society of Chemistry Award for Chromatography & Separation Science has been awarded to Dr C F Simpson, of the University of London. The prize, which is sponsored by Whatman Scientific, was awarded for fundamental contributions in separation science, particularly in the development of detectors for gas chromatography, and for furthering understanding of the separation mechanisms involved in the development of bonded phases for high performance liquid chromatography. Dr Simpson was presented with his award in the RSC library at Burlington House, Piccadilly in London by Professor C W Rees, President-Elect of the Royal Society of Chemistry, who congratulated all the award winners on their achievements, and thanked September/October

Cerafil at Gloster Metals A filter unit containing Cerafil ceramic filter elements has demonstrated outstanding performance and shown excellent reliability over the last 15 months at Gloster Metals. The filter was designed and installed by Glosfume Ltd. Gloster Metals recovers aluminium metal from scrap which contains up to 10% of volatile components such as oil, grease and plastics. These components create large quantities of smoke and fume during the reclamation process. The local authority was pressing for a significant reduction in emissions of smoke particulate and was even threatening plant closure if newly-imposed pollution limits could not be met. The filter, manufactured by Glosfume Ltd, of Gloucester, was designed to eliminate all smoke emission from the process; it contains 144 Cerafll elements and handles 2000 ft3/min of exhaust air at temperatures between 60 and 450°C. Glosfume Ltd installed the filter in the spring of 1991. Since then the performance has been outstanding and Gloster Metals has reported that there are now no detectable emissions from the process. Equally important is the fact that the filter plant has required absolutely no maintenance over the complete operating period, demonstrating the reliability of Cerafil under difficult process conditions.
