SABIC boosts Stamax capacity GROWING demand from the automotive industry has prompted SABIC to increase production capacity for STAMAX® P reinforced thermoplastic to 35 000 tonnes a year. A second production line will be added to the STAMAX BV compounding facilities in Genk, Belgium, where the long glass fibre reinforced polypropylene (PP) is produced. Construction of the new production line has begun and is expected to be finished early next year. The investment involved in the expansion has not been disclosed. Sabic says market growth for STAMAX P is much higher than that for other automotive polymers. The material can be used to make front-end modules, dashboard carriers, door modules and under-body shielding. Recent applications are the front-end modules on the 2003 Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen's Tourareg sport

DSM Petrochemicals (now part of SABIC EuroChemicals) and glass fibre producer Owens Corning founded STAMAX BV as a joint venture in 1998 and set up the production line in Genk. SABIC acquired full ownership of STAMAX BV in March this year. Owens Corning will continue to supply the PerforMax® long glass fibres used to produce the material. SABIC EuroPetrochemicals is part of SABIC, the Middle East's largest petrochemicals company, based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. SABIC EuroPetrochemicals; website: www.sabic-europe.com.
