Solid/liquid separation co-operation renewed Larox Corp has recently signed an co-operation agreement with Codelco Chile to continue the work of both parties to improve solid/liquid separation solutions for process steps in concentration, hydrometallurgy and smelting. The agreement follows on from one signed by both companies back in 1997. According to Toivo Matti Karppanen, president of Larox, Codelco Chile and Larox have found the co-operation beneficial. Future joint work will focus on the possibilities to improve the actual processes, increase the efficiency of solid/liquid separation, cut operational costs and improve final product quality. Codelco Chile is described as the world's largest copper producer. The company belongs to the Chilean state and its main business is exploring for, developing and operating mines containing copper and by-products, the processing of them into refined copper and selling them. In recent years, Codelco Chile has accounted for an average of 18% of Chile's exports. Sale completed of waste r e m e d i a t o r The purchase of remediation company Envirogen Inc by Shaw Environmental & Infrastructure Inc (Shaw E & I), a subsidiary of the Shaw Group Inc, has been completed. Under the terms of the agreement Shaw E & l paid approximately US$3.63 million for all of Envirogen's outstanding common stock. The sale of Envirogen was approved by its shareholders in March. Envirogen's core business is the application of biotechnology to remediate contaminated waste streams (both air and wastewater) and sites. Envirogen specializes in proprietary methods of remediating and treating hazardous contaminants such as ammonium percholorate (solid propellant for rockets and missiles), methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE, fuel additive used to make gasoline burn cleaner~ and 1,4-dioxane (explosives). The company operates a fully-equipped and permitted research and development laboratory and pilot plant facility to support technology and system development. It has the capability to provide a variety of remediation solutions, ranging from investigations, audits and regulatory representation to desigm construcuon, operational management, closure and post-closure momtoring. Commenting on the deal Tim Barfield, president of Shaw E & I,, said, "With the addition of Envirogen, Shaw will have a distinct technological and competitive edge to address the complex remediation of ammonium percholorate, MTBE, and other contaminates. He added that the acquisition will allow Shaw E & I to rake a leadership role in these key markets, by coupling its existing environmental capabilities.
