Dispersions Butting heads in polyaspartic acid Both $2.3 bn/y Donlar Biosyntrex Corp and Bayer have big hopes for polyaspartic acid (PAA). PAA is a dispersing agent. It dissolves limescale in drainage pipes and inhibits corrosion. In detergents it is an anti-redeposition agent, preventing dirt from reattaching itself to fabrics during washing. PAA also has agricultural uses. The market for PAA in scale and corrosion prevention in offshore rigs alone is already put at $600 M. Donlar has a 30 M Ibs/y plant in Peru, IL, with room to expand by 120 M Ibs/y. Bayer estimates the size of the global polyacrylates market at around 2 bn Ibs/y and says all the current applications for polyacrylates could be replaced by PAA. Bayer has a 600,000 Ibs/y PAA plant at Leverkusen. A 20 M Ibs/y plant is due onstream at the site by the end of Jun. A plant will also be erected at Baytown, TX, when demand warrants. Both Bayer and Donlar are trying to develop markets for their product. Bayer says there is particularly strong pressure in Europe to cut the use of poorly biodegradable organic components in detergents. Chemical and Engineering News, 25 Feb 2002, 80 (8), 23-24

and shower cleansing systems. Global production of soap is pegged at 9 bn tonnes, accounting for 50% of total surfactant output worldwide. Liquid formulations have enjoyed strong growth in Europe and North America, although current trends reveal that the growth is stabilizing. Soap retail value indicated a 2% increase in 2000 from 1999. Toilet soap bars currently enjoy sales of $9.65 bn. Pacific Asia is considered the largest market, accounting for 39% or $3.76 bn of global sales. Europe comes next with 23% or $2.2 bn, then the Americas with 22% or $2.1 bn. The Asian market is expected to show a growth rate of 23%/y compared to 1-2%/y for other regions. Multifunctionality is becoming a vital property of soap, with recent studies showing that the typical consumer seeks an optimal balance between hygiene, visual satisfaction, skin effect, and safety and ease of use in soap products. Revised import norms for inputs irk soap sector Under the aegis of The All India Liquid Bulk Importers and Exporters Association, the soap industry in India has expressed dissatisfaction with Budget 2002-2003 proposals, which stipulates revised quality standards for key raw material like crude palm stearine and crude palm kernel oil. In its notification dated 1 Mar 2002, the Government of India has increased the free fatty acid (FFA) content limit in crude palm stearine and similar material from 10% to 20%. Importers can avail a lower duty of 30% ad valorem only if the new stipulated limit is met. According to the soap industry, this would impact the quality of light coloured soaps and the recovery of glycerol. The norm would hit the supply chain, thereby affecting the oleo-chemical industry and soap majors like Hindustan Lever and Godrej Industries. Further, the quality of the imported raw material will be affected since cheaper high-FFA material will have to be mixed with the raw material to increase its FFA to more than 20%. Switch to percarbonate could be completed by 2005 W European detergent producers may complete a changeover from sodium perborate to sodium percarbonate as a bleaching agent by the end of 2003. There is concern over the environmental effects of boron. New coating technology has overcome the problem of instability with sodium percarbonate. Sodium percarbonate accounts for 60% of the persalts bleaching market. FMC Foret is to increase sodium percarbonate capacity from 15,000 tons/y to 35,000 tons/y by converting part of its sodium perborate capacity at La Zaida, Spain in the 2H of 2003. MedAvox (joint venture Degussa and Ausimont) is to open a 50,000 tonnes/y sodium percarbonate plant in Bussi, Italy in 2003. Increased demand has been particularly beneficial to the market leader Solvay. The European Commission may require Solvay to divest its holding in MedAvox following its acquisition of Ausimont. Multifunctionality and mildness drive speciality surfactants Wipes are a new product introduction that is helping to drive the speciality surfactant market. In personal care formulation speciality sur-factants provide conditioning, feel, lather and other functionality as well conventional surfactant properties. In 2000, the market for cosmetic and toiletry products in the USA, Japan and Western Europe was $68 bn. Western Europe accounts for 42% of the market or $29 bn, followed by the USA at 40% or $27 bn and then Japan at 17% or $12 bn. In the market for surfactants globalisation is a continuing issue. Products that delay the natural ageing process and naturally-derived raw materials are high growth areas. Products that mitigate environmental effects, multifunctional ingredients and formulated products are forecast to gain increased popularity. Greater demand for mildness and multifunctionality in surfactants is also evident. Major producers of speciality sut-factants are Cognis, BASF, Croda, Degussa-Goldschmidt, Dow Chemical, Akzo Nobel Surface Chemistry, Lonza, Uniqema, Rhodia, Crompton, Clariant, Huntsman, Stepan, and International Speciality Products. Wet and dry wipes are gaining market share at unprecedented rates. Speciality sur-factants, particularly alkylpolyglycosides, play an essential part in the application of the active ingredients onto the dry wipe. Opportunities for new product and 4
technology development in speciality surfactants continue to be provided by the potential elimination of alkanolamides from personal care formulations. Cognis is a supplier of a wide range of amphoteric, anionic, cationic, and non-ionic speciality surfactants for applications in personal care formulations. In Nov 2001 Cognis Thai announced a doubling of its sur-factants capacity by 2002 at its surfactants facilities at Bangpakong, Thailand. Degussa-Goldschmidt has recently introduced several new products, such as Cosmocair P813, Tego Care CG 90, and Abil Care 85. Croda recently introduced two new products: Crodafos CS20 Acid and lncroquat DCMC and DCPG. Akzo Nobel is investing E23 M in a new surfactant plant on Jurong Island, Singapore. In Dee 2000, Uniqema introduced its Arlatone Versaflex line of emulsion stabilisers. A key surfactant introduction from Uniqema is Promidium 2, a second generation replacement for DEA-alkanolamides that is a 100% active liquid non-ionic surfactant. ISP offers Surfadone LP linear N-alkyl-2-pyrrolidone surfactants that are low-foaming nonionic speciality surfactants and wetting agents.
