It is therefore significant that, at the same time as this report has been released, the European Commission (EC) has decided to boost the development and application of European MBR for municipal wastewater treatment by financing two projects within the scope of its 6th Framework Programme – AMEDEUS and EUROMBRA. The two consortia are made up of 25 European universities, research centres, enterprises and MBR plant operators. As well as this, two Australian universities and one South-African university are involved. The global project envelope totals around 12 million, of which the EC’s contribution to the projects amounts to 6 million and the Australian government’s to approximately 0.5 Million. It starts in October 2005 and is scheduled to last for three years. AMEDEUS and EUROMBRA will focus on research and development of the membrane activated sludge technology. The objectives of the project are as follows: • To reduce both capital and operation costs of the MBR technology in Europe in order to increase its competitiveness with respect to conventional technologies • To increase the share of European companies in the market of MBR plants, in the EU as well as worldwide, while strengthening the European MBR market • To facilitate the implementation of the European directive on wastewater treatment, and bathing waters, as well as increasing the potential for nonpotable reuse of treated effluent.

WESTFALIA ACQUIRES MEMBRAFLOW GROUP With effect from 1 October 2005, Westfalia Separator Group has acquired Membraflow Group, the company reports. The newly acquired company will in future trade under the name Westfalia Separator Membraflow GmbH. Membraflow Group produces and installs ceramic membranes and membrane filtration installations. It is said to be highly profitable, generating sales of approximately 9 million. The company, which is based in Essingen near Stuttgart, Germany, employs 34 people. Membraflow is said to be one of the three largest players in the global market for filtration with ceramic elements, which is estimated to generate sales of roughly 100 million a year and is forecast to grow rapidly over the next few years. According to Westfalia, the acquisition of the Membraflow Group now puts Westfalia in the position to offer complete product clarification within the process chain. Products of Membraflow are already being sporadically used in conjunction with its separators or decanters. In the food sector, its main market, for example, its biggest customers are engaged in the production of gelatine and starch. However, the company also works with winemakers and fruit-juice producers.

SARTORIUS AG WINS AWARD FOR ‘BEST INNOVATOR’ 2005 Sartorius has won the ‘Best Innovator 2005’ award in the category of ‘Time to Profit’ in a competition organised by management consultant A T Kearney and the leading German-language business magazine WirtschaftsWoche.

According to the jury, Sartorius succeeded in considerably accelerating its research and development time for its Mechatronics Division products through the company’s use of what it calls ‘innovation management’. “Shorter cycles in the development of customer-focused product solutions are playing an everincreasing role as the foremost differentiating criterion and as an essential value driver,” said the jurors. A T Kearney and WirtschaftsWoche annually award the best German innovation management. In addition to Sartorius, awards were conferred to Ethicon GmbH, Henkel KGaA, VW AG, Valeo GmbH and Hirschmann GmbH.

MALVERN INSTRUMENTS LAUNCHES ‘INTELLISENSE’ Malvern Instruments and the Institute of Particle Science & Engineering (IPSE) at Leeds University in the UK have formed a longterm partnership to launch ‘IntelliSense’. IntelliSense is a programme designed to develop the business of particulate processing by furthering the basic science, developing expertise and innovation, and providing industrial relevance by targeting real commercial and industrial issues, the companies report. Particulate processing is an important operation in the manufacture of pharmaceutical, agro-chemical, dye and pigment, food, detergent, personal and speciality chemical products and has a predicted growth factor of 5 to 10 over the next decade. The organisers of the programme intend to encourage industrial input through seminars on key particulate measurement and control problems. As well as this, using a combination of sensor
