PLANTS Brazil: Sun Chemical – waterborne pigment dispersions Towards the end of August, Sun Chemical opened a new pigment dispersions plant and on-site technical laboratories at its Rio de Janeiro complex. At the same time, the company introduced its new Aquadisperse family of waterborne pigment dispersions for the decorative paints market. Mr Myron Petruch (President, Performance Pigments) said: “We have made a major investment to support the growth in the South American region. By manufacturing our Aquadisperse pigment dispersion line here, we are increasing service and value to our customers in this region.” Designed for in-plant tinting of emulsion paints, Aquadisperse pigment dispersions provide extra strength and value that customers find difficult to achieve on their own. These products offer high physical and colour stability, good wet rub resistance, meet stringent specifications and can be easily mixed, poured and pumped. The Aquadisperse family comprises nine popular pigments – PY3, PY74, PY42, PO5, PR112, PR122, PB15:1, PG7 and PBk7.

Czech Republic & Spain: IQAP – masterbatch Industrias Quimicas Auxiliares del Plástico SA (IQAP) was founded in 1979, initially producing polyvinyl chloride (PVC) masterbatches for the wire and cable sector. In 2004, IQAP merged with Colorpoint SA and the company’s masterbatch production was moved to a new site at Les Masies de Roda (80 km north of Barcelona). In 2005, IQAP acquired a masterbatch plant at Tabor (90 km south of Prague, Czech Republic). In 2007, IQAP took over the businesses of Alcolor and Paint Desarrollos, both based at Ibi (45 km north of Alicante). As part of the Alcolor takeover, IQAP acquired a 2500 tonnes/y masterbatch plant at Ibi. In June 2013, the company added a new production line at Tabor, doubling its capacity to 6000 tonnes/y. This plant specialises in the production of black masterbatch for multifilament and polyester staple fibre used mainly in the textiles sector. In July 2013, IQAP raised its capacity at Les Masies de Roda from 10,000 tonnes/y to 19,000 tonnes/y, thanks to the installation of a new state-of-the-art ZSK extrusion line supplied by Coperion GmbH (of Stuttgart). Last December, Coperion was acquired by the Indiana-based Hillenbrand Inc (See also ‘Focus on Pigments’, Feb 2013, 7). The company’s operations have now been integrated with those of K-Tron, which joined the Hillenbrand Process Equipment group in 2010. Effective 1 October 2013, the two companies will use a single brandname Coperion KTron, emphasising its unique position as a single supply source for both complete customised compounding
systems and bulk materials handling systems.
