The View From Here
What can we do? First of all, we must evaluate and respond to our own local needs. If your state, community, or program is losing federal support, find out exactly what that loss will mean for your patients or clients. Get informed, and keep informed, about who lives in your community, who holds the power, and what the specific problems are. Get involved politically; join a local advocacy or volunteer group; become active in community groups, the PTA, the school board. Could reallocation or reorganization alleviate whatever deficit you face? Ask yourself, what can I do? Then do it. Our other major task at hand is to speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves. It seems this country has yet to find its moral center. It is up to us as individuals and as professionals to pay attention to those in want, respecting their rights and responding to their needs. We can make a direct contribution to those we serve, and we can and must object when our country proposes to abandon them. Jeanne Kalinoski
