Report on Refinery Effluents The oil companies' international study group for conservation of clean air and water-Europe (CONCAWE) has issued a report (No. 8/82) on ways in which ecological monitoring can assist in evaluating the environmental impact of aqueous petroleum refinery effluents. The report gives case histories of monitoring programmes at six freshwater or coastal locations in various European countries. Oil Spill Summary An international summary and review, The 1982 Oil Spill Expert's Guide, has been published by Oil Spill Intelligence Report. The 40-page booklet includes summaries of international regulations, legal updates on recent major pollution incidents, an international summary of oil spills and new developments in clean-up technology. WWF Sanctuary Gains Fame Malaysia's first marine sanctuary now features in two films which have gained worldwide attention. The work of the Pulau Redang Park in Trengganu, established by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-Malaysia, is shown in

Malaysia's Underwater World. Giant Turtles of Trengganu features conservation measures taken to ensure the survival of the rare Giant Leathery Turtle, by transferring eggs laid on open beaches to a hatchery. The films are the latest to be produced by WWF - Malaysia.

Scandinavian Spill Exercise Denmark, Norway and Sweden recently conducted a joint oil spill response exercise involving more than 30 work boats which simulated an operation reacting to a tanker collision in the North Sea where 15 000 to 20 000 tons of crude oil had been spilled. To strengthen contingency planning for such an event, Denmark and West Germany have signed a joint contingency plan for the German Bight of the North Sea and the western part of the Baltic. The 'Danger Plan' details the chain of command and the communications system to be implemented during a major spill response.

MIT Seminar The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Sea Grant Programme is to host an Arctic Technology seminar on 2--4 March 1983. Preliminary topics include arctic seismic exploration, resource economics, environmental considerations in the Arctic and arctic oceanography. Exxon Face $1m Damage Claim An oysterman in Louisiana has filed a 1 million dollar lawsuit against Exxon USA Inc., claiming that an oil spill 405
