of Technology,

I demonstrate how soliton recoil is accounted for by the various quantization schemes. To do this I first identify the S-matrix and then calculate some amplitudes for scattering of quanta off a soliton state in the especially simple case of a generic nonlinear 1 + 1 dimensional theory of a single scalar field. All that is assumed is that the theory has classical solitary wave solutions, and that these solutions correspond to states in the full quantum theory. Next I describe how these calculations generalize to the case when the soliton has internal quantum numbers and propagates in higher dimensions. Finally, I comment on the lessons of this work as they relate to string theory spacetime solitons-in particular, to the role of zero mode vertex operators in perturbatively accounting for soliton recoil.

We investigate the interaction of two parallel magnetic strings which is due to the perturbation of the vacuum state of a scalar massive field. The Green function with one string is studied in detail and the influence of the second string is found in perturbation theory. The Casimir force is expressed in terms of Bessel functions.
