Bangalore, 6-14 August 1985. The Bangalore Conference, organized by the ICSU-CTS (Committee on the Teaching of Science) in collaboration with Unesco, the United Nations University and the Indian National Science Academy and with the support of a number of Indian organizations, as well as international ones, such as the Canadian International Development Agency and the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), took place from 6 to 14 August 1985. Over 300 participants from all regions of the world attended the Conference which examined the ways in which science and technology education can be made more relevant to the needs of society in eight areas of concern: i. ii. iii. iv.

Health Food and agriculture Energy resources Land, water and mineral resources V. Industry and technology vi. Environment vii. Information, transfer and technology viii. Ethics and social responsibility The Conference was opened by the Chief Minister of the State of Karnataka. A message to the Conference from the Prime Minister of India was read: this stressed the importance of science and technology education for development. Other plenary sessions during the Conference were devoted to each of the eight Conference topics, and the rest of the time was spent in topic workshops. Over 200 papers were prepared for and distributed prior to the Conference and one of the outcomes will be the publication by ICSU Press and Pergamon Press of nine volumes, one devoted to each of the Conference topics, with the ninth volume dealing with general issues raised at the Conference. These are expected to be available by early 1986. Other follow-up activities will be further workshops and seminars, the continued development of educational materials and the expansion of the growing network of science and technology educators worldwide.
