REGISTRY SERIES
Scientific Registry of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation: Introduction to the 2010 annual reports Marshall I. Hertz, MD, Paul Aurora, PhD, MRCP, Jason D. Christie, MD, MS, Fabienne Dobbels, PhD, Leah B. Edwards, PhD, Richard Kirk, MA, FRCP, FRCPCH, Anna Y. Kucheryavaya, MS, Axel O. Rahmel, MD, Amanda W. Rowe, and Josef Stehlik, MD From The ISHLT Transplant Registry, Dallas, Texas. We are pleased to present the 2010 Annual Reports of the Scientific Registry (the Registry) of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT), which coincide with the 30th Anniversary of the Society. Since 1983, the Registry has collected and reported data regarding nearly 125,000 heart, heart-lung, and lung transplants. The past year has been our most active to date, with 6,119 transplants added to the Registry from more than 225 centers worldwide (Appendix). We again wish to express thanks to the many heart and lung transplant surgeons and physicians, clinical coordinators, data coordinators, and organ exchange organizations throughout the world, whose timely and accurate submission of data has made attaining these milestones possible. There are many ways to access the Transplant Registry data. As in past years, all of the data figures and tables included in the Registry reports are also available on the ISHLT Web site (www.ishlt.org/registries) in PowerPoint (Microsoft Corp, Redmond, Wash) format. The Web site also contains many data slides that are not included in the published reports. In addition, those wishing to view the published Heart, Lung and Heart-Lung, and Pediatric reports online may do so at www.cardiosource.com. Continent-specific and center-specific data reports can also be obtained from the secure section of the ISHLT web site

(www.ishlt.org). Continent-specific reports are available to everyone and allow comparison of continent-specific transplant data with that of all transplants submitted to the Registry. Center-specific reports allow comparison of an individual center with that of all transplants submitted to the Registry. These reports are available to all actively participating centers, including those submitting data through organ exchange organizations. Because we only want staff members affiliated with each center to access center-specific reports from their own center, center-specific reports require a user name and password, which can be obtained from Kathryn Philibin (
[email protected]). We were pleased that 6 abstracts based on Registry data were presented at this year’s ISHLT Scientific Sessions in Chicago: 1. Artificial neural networks—a method for optimal donorrecipient matching. Large scale simulation of survival after heart transplantation (J. Nilsson, et al); 2. Body mass index and its impact on outcome in children after lung transplantation: An analysis of the ISHLT pediatric lung transplant registry (C. Benden, et al); 3. Outcomes after heart transplantation for chemotherapyinduced cardiomyopathy: Results from a multi-center registry (B.W. Hardaway, et al); 4. A decision analysis comparing the societal impact of bilateral vs single-lung transplantation for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (J.C. Munson, et al); 5. Determinants of survival in patients bridged to heart transplantation with continuous-flow vs pulsatile-flow ventricular assist devices (J.N. Nativi, et al);

6. Pre-obese and obese patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis are at high risk for early mortality after double transplantation (C.J. Gries, et al). These presentations illustrate the ongoing commitment of the ISHLT and the Registry to the promotion of scholarship and the development of new clinical investigators. The Registry remains the world’s most comprehensive record of heart and lung transplant activity, practices, and outcomes, and is a resource for ongoing research regarding these continually evolving areas of practice. We appreciate the ongoing commitment by the ISHLT and its
members to the continued health and growth of this valuable resource.
