Scott Bader becomes Daimler’s approved supplier
BUSINESS
Scott Bader has recently become an approved supplier of composite moulding and structural adhesive products to all of Daimler’s production facilities, including Mercedes-Benz Cars, Daimler Trucks, Mercedes-Benz Vans, and Daimler Buses. The FRP lamination products supplied will include the company’s Crystic Ecogel S1PA spray gelcoat to help reduce styrene emission levels in Daimler factories. Closed mould grades of Crystic unsaturated polyester resins will also be supplied to the Daimler AG Group and approved subcontract convertors fabricating composite vehicle parts.
HGV applications Within Daimler Trucks, Crestabond M1-05 primer less methacrylate structural adhesive is now specified for a variety of HGV applications. This includes M1-05 being used to bond ABS to ABS and ABS to aluminium components together as part of the assembly process used to fabricate the sleeping bunk in the driver’s cab of Freightliner Trucks in North America. The bonding of these ABS and aluminium bunk parts with Crestabond M1-05 is carried out by a

Speakers named for Composites UK AGM UK trade organisation Composites UK’s AGM and annual conference, which takes place on 13 May at the University of Warwick, UK, has outlined its speaker program. Nigel O’Dea of Lucintel will look at how the UK can compete in the global market place, while Alison Star of the National Composites Centre will present an update of the UK Composites Strategy launched later this year. ‘One of our fundamental objectives is to facilitate the growth of the UK composites
industry,’ said Dr. Sue Halliwell, operations manager for Composites UK said. ‘We have invited Nigel and Alison back for a second year as both have key positions enabling them to have a fantastic outlook on the latest trends and upcoming initiatives.’
Case studies Member companies Forward Composites and SHD Composites will also provide
case studies showcasing how they have achieved business growth in the past year, supported by a presentation from Philip Bruce of Scott Bader identifying the strengths, gaps and opportunities in the UK supply chain. Composites UK’s supply chain officer, Stella Job, will inform delegates of the new UK capabilities database and the impact this will have on industry statistics. Composites UK; www.compositesuk.co.uk
Solvay and 3A Composites join forces to develop foams Solvay and 3A Composites have formed an alliance to develop foam materials to make more lightweight parts for advanced transportation. The partners will first build on Solvay’s Radel foam and sandwich materials, used on Airbus A350 and Solar Impulse, and will later expand to other products that Solvay is developing. Commercial aircraft or high-speed trains are increasingly seeking to replace heavier 112
plastics and metal structures. Lightweight applications range from the cabin to ducting and trolleys and help to improve energy efficiency.
Game changer ‘Our alliance is a game changer in making high-tech foams available on a large global business development manager aerospace and composites scale,’ said Armin Klesing, at Solvay’s specialty polymers
global business unit. ‘Part makers will benefit from greater flexibility in their designs and from uniting strength and insulation performance at the highest level of fire resistance.’ 3A Composites expects additional foam extrusion capacity in the United States to come on stream 2016 and will continue to service the market with its existing product lines.
