Avecia-spinout Reaxa starts solo trading Reaxa, a specialist in catalyst technology that has spun out from the UK speciality chemical firm Avecia, has begun trading as a separate unit. Its primary technologies include EnCat encapsulated catalysts and QuadraPure organic and precious metal scavenger resins. The two technologies may benefit the pharmaceuticals industry, which utilises immobilised precious metal catalysts and is concerned in new methods of recovering metal contaminants from products and process waste. Reaxa claims the technologies can help minimise contamination and clean-up costs while boosting the amount of expensive materials that are recycled and reused. 2004. During 2Q 2005, the company’s total cost of metals sold was $99.5 M ($48.9 M in 2Q 2004). The 2Q 2005 sales include 26,000 ounces of PGMs from catalyst recycling, including 11,000 ounces of palladium, 12,000 ounces of platinum and 3000 ounces of rhodium, and 109,600 ounces of palladium delivered out of the inventory received in the 2003 Norilsk Nickel transaction. The results of 1H ended Jun 2005 are included in the report. Revenues increased 49% to $125.4 M for 2Q 2005 ($84.2 M in 2Q 2004). The $41.2 M increase was driven by an increase of about $31.5 M in mine production revenues due to an increase in the quantity of metals sold, 161,000 ounces during 2Q 2005 (90,000 ounces in 2Q 2004). For 1H 2005, revenues increased by 37% to $252.8 M ($184.9 M in 1H 2004). Süd-Chemie reviewed Süd-Chemie is a global leader in the supply of catalysts, adsorbents, and

additives. The company’s current sales are €862 M but this is to rise to €1.2 bn by the end of the decade. This will be achieved by organic growth. Any growth from acquisitions will be additional to this. SüdChemie’s portfolio includes products ranging from catalysts for the refining, petrochemical, chemical industries and for environmental protection, rheological products for paints and coatings, to functional packaging, electronic products, and nanomaterials. The Asia/Pacific region and the Middle East are regarded as the main areas of opportunity for future growth. SüdChemie recently invested in the formation of Süd-Chemie Liaohe Catalyst Company Ltd. This supplies catalysts mostly for the fertilizers industry and for methanol production. Chemical Week, 10 Aug 2005, 167 (26), 25-27 (Website: http://www.chemweek.com)
