One-piece toggle switch cover with integral panel standoff and seal receptacle Applicant: Honeywell International, USA This patent covers the design of a toggle switch that requires both sealing of the toggle stalk, and between the switch and the panel. A seal is provided between the toggle lever (12) and the bushing (22) of the switch cover, in order to prevent moisture and other contaminants from passing through the switch. The panel seal is seated around the bushing and within the protrusions (30), so that the pro-

trusions determine the amount of compression of the seal. The switch is fitted to the panel with a single fastener, so that the seal is squeezed between the standoff and the panel to provide a seal. A particular feature claimed for this design is the ease of fitting, and that it is not necessary to restrain the switch while tightening the fastener. Patent number: WO 2004/059675 Inventors: M.J. Skarlupka et al. Publication date: 15 July 2004

Seal assembly for turbo machines and compressors Applicant: Cross Manufacturing Co, UK This patent describes a variety of seal arrangements for gas turbines, steam turbines, compressors, gas pumps, turbo-chargers and vacuum pumps. They are primarily segmented seal types arranged in a channel-shaped seal body. The seal surface may be profiled to promote a hydrodynamic film between the seal surface and the rotating element, or alternatively it may have one or more cavities for connection to a high-pressure source to form a hydrostatic bearing. In the latter case the seal body may include one or more conduits extending between the cavities and a face of the seal body, which is exposed to the higher-pressure region. The seal bodies or shoes are arranged circumferentially side-byside in the channel to abut end to end. A resilient element is provided to energize the seal segments into sealing contact with the rotating shaft. These resilient elements may be a variety of designs of leaf spring, or a series of coil springs.

Examples of some of the spring designs described in WO 2004/ 053365 to energize seal segments for high-speed rotary seals.
