PATENTS Sealing system for cable entries Applicant: Roxtec Ab, Sweden The objective of this invention is to provide an improved sealing system for cable entries or pipe penetration points. It uses a frame for receiving one or more compressible modules. A compressible module contains openings with ‘‘peelable’’ layers to enable it to adapt to the diameter of the cable or pipe. The flange and groove combination makes it possible to retain the compressible modules in the frame without using stay plates between each row of modules. Consequently the tolerance may be improved while precision during manufacturing is maintained. Patent number: WO/2010/089291 Inventors: J. Andersson, M. Ericson, J. Filipsen, U. Hildingsson, C. Lundborg, S. Milton, R. Pettersson and J. Åkesson Publication date: 1 December 2011

Sealed box Applicant: Y. Liu, China Details of a sealed box, or what is effectively a sealed, strong box or safe, are disclosed. The design and arrangement of the seals around the door are described. Patent number: WO/2011/147275 Inventors: Y. Liu and W. Huang Publication date: 1 December 2011

Sealing structure for a turbine Applicant: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd, Japan This patent covers a sealing structure for a turbine. It is designed to curtail disturbances to a main fluid stream, caused by bypass leakage. The sealing structure includes shroud members, provided at the tips of a plurality of blades. The design of the shroud is covered in considerable detail. Patent number: WO/2011/148899 Inventors: Y. Kuwamura, K. Matsumoto, H. Oyama, Y. Tanaka and A. Matsuo Publication date: 1 December 2011

Bellows seal assembly Applicant: Caterpillar Inc, USA The bellows seal described by this patent has been developed to improve the reliability of such seal designs, which are used to protect spherical joints on earth-moving equipment. The seal body generally defines an ‘‘S-shaped’’ cross-section. The purpose is to reduce the strain that occurs in previous designs, which were subject to ‘‘radial swaging’’, and also reduce manufacturing costs. Patent number: WO/2011/150150 Inventors: D.J. Becker and R.P. Wietharn Publication date: 1 December 2011

Sealing system for a

Applicant: Eastman Kodak Co, USA This patent provides details of a seal for an outlet port of an ink tank in an ink-jet printer. Patent number: WO/2011/149809 Inventor: K.J. O’Leary Publication date: 1 December 2011

Applicant: Nitto Denko Corp, Japan A method is described for sealing the gap between a wall and a duct, or a similar structure that is being passed through the wall. It involves using an elastic layer; an adhesive layer that is laminated on the surface of the elastic layer; and a separate sheet that is laminated on the surface of the adhesive layer. The method of assembly is also described. Patent number: WO/2011/148911 Inventors: T. Kousaka, T.Tamura and J. Asano Publication date: 1 December 2011 14

Sealing Technology

Patent WO/2011/147900 details a tapered seal design for use in refrigerators. It is shown here assembled in a groove.

a tapered shape. This design makes it easy to align the sealing element and insert it into the groove, and simplifies assembly of the sealing element. If the groove is formed by injection-moulding, a shape with an opening at the top that is larger in cross-sectional area than at the bottom also facilitates mould release. An outer surface of the side-sealing portion and the inclined surface are oriented at approximately the same inclined angle not less than 4º. The angle may be 5º to 6º. The sealing element also may have a groove that is designed to accept the edge of the mating component. Patent number: WO/2011/147900 Inventors: J. Ma, Y. Ding, Y. Huang, F. Tao, Z. Yang and D. Zhao Publication date: 1 December 2011

The ‘‘S-shaped’’ cross-sectional bellows seal covered by patent WO/2011/150150 is designed to protect swivel joints on earth-moving equipment.

household appliance Applicant: BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH, Germany This invention relates to a sealing system and a household appliance in which it is used. In particular, this patent refers to a refrigeration appliance that has a storage chamber that can be evacuated (that is, a ‘‘low-pressure chamber’’ or ‘‘vacuum chamber’’). The groove and the sealing element described each have

Applicant: GE Healthcare Bio-Sciences Ab, Sweden A sanitary piston head with a body that includes a resilient sealing skirt forms the subject of this patent. The skirt is biased in the sealing direction by a radially biasing element. Patent number: WO/2011/149414 Inventors: B.A. Johansson and P. Åkerström Publication date: 1 December 2011

Sealing material for solar-cell modules Applicant: Dai Nippon Printing Co Ltd, Japan Disclosed are details of a sealing material for solar-cell modules and a method of manufacturing it. The process used ensures that the material has good transparency properties and is heat resistant, while using a polyethylene resin. The resin has a density of 0.900 g/cm3 or less and an MFR of 0.1–1.0 g/10 min. The sealing material is obtained by melt-moulding a
