PATENTS Patent number: WO/2011/159670 Inventors: R. Miller, Roger, M. Klimes and B.E. Roach Publication date: 22 December 2011

Gasket Applicant: NOK Corp, Japan This invention relates to an elastomer gasket. According to the patent, the gasket body is integrated with a resin-made carrier. The rigidity of this carrier is further increased to improve the handleability of the gasket, and the thickness of the gasket is maintained to save space. A range of carrier designs are illustrated that have a variety of step features within the section that is moulded onto the gasket profile. Patent number: WO/2011/158624 Inventors: T. Masaka, Y. Kurano and S. Koga Publication date: 22 December 2011

Seal for a vacuum press Applicant: Schmid Technology Systems GmbH, Germany A seal for the “platens” of a vacuum press has been developed. The seal described by this patent fits around the perimeter of a rectangular platen. The cross-section of the seal contains a retained flange and a flexible lip. The inventors claim that satisfactory sealing can be achieved through either low or high compression of the seal as the platens are brought together. Patent number: WO/2011/161013 Inventors: A. Reichle and M. Storz Publication date: 29 December 2011

Sealing member for an enclosure Applicant: 3M Innovative Properties Co, USA A design is provided for an enclosure, which can be re-entered and creates a sealed environment for a cable splice often required by telecommunications systems. The enclosure is cylindrical and has a hinge situated on one of its sides. The seal that is used for each half of the enclosure is designed so that the respective halves intermesh to create a high integrity sealed structure. Patent number: WO/2011/162926 Inventor: R.L. Sealing system for the windscreen of a vehicle Applicant: Xinyi Rubber & Plastic (Shenzhen) Co Ltd, China The subject of this patent is a sealing system for window glass used in a vehicle. It uses a speciallyshaped member (2) with a reinforcing insert (21) to assist the seal (23) in sealing between the windscreen (1) and what is described as a tank (3). Technical Editor’s comment: The English abstract is reproduced here in full because the description and small diagrams contained in the patent did not help me to clearly understand the seal arrangement. It appears that this may be a spiral of braided packing, oriented in a radial configuration.

Seal ring Applicant: Kabushiki Kaisha Riken, Japan The seal ring described by this patent has been designed to achieve low leakage characteristics and have low friction properties – to reduce drive loss in a car transmission. A rotary piston-ring seal, such as the one found on an automatic transmission, is used. Recesses are disposed on the inner peripheral part of at least a contact side surface of the seal ring so as to be separated from each other in the circumferential direction. A number of variations in the design of the profile of the recesses are illustrated. Presumably the purpose is to provide a lubrication feature. Patent number: WO/2011/162283 Inventors: J. Nagai, T. structure that consists of a number of continuously sleeved ring layers arranged in a specific order and direction – going from the inside to the outside. The innermost braided ring layer is used as the core. The tail-end of the first braided ring layer is sleeved on the head-end of the first braided ring layer, and serves as the headend of the second braided ring layer in order to implement continuous braiding without any interruption. The second braided ring layer is sleeved on the first braided ring layer and the third braided ring layer is sleeved on the second braided ring layer. In this way the nth braided ring layer is sleeved on the (n-1)th braided ring layer, and n braided ring layers have (n-1) continuous intact braided ring layers. The tail-end of the outermost braided ring layer is superposed with the head-end of the innermost braided ring layer. By using this approach, the service life and sealing effect of the braided sealing ring are increased. A perimeter-limiting ring is also contained in the seal to improve its dimensional precision and prevent it from deforming during braiding and reshaping. Patent number: WO/2011/160318 Inventors: Q.
