Saint-Gobain launches new sealing materials Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics has just announced the introduction of a new low temperature fluoroelastomer material, OmniFlex, along with a new 0.3 mm to 1.0 mm Korel urethane foam. OmniFlex is claimed to be close to the performance of perfluoroelastomer material in chemical resistance and inertness, yet has a softer durometer and improved compression set. Low temperature performance is claimed to be particularly good with a Low Temperature Retraction (TR10) of –57°C (–70°F). The material is said to be suitable for low friction hydraulic seals and standard O-rings. Special shapes can easily be manufactured to typical dimensional tolerances. The new Korel foam is intended for telecommunications gasket and sealing applications. The micro-cellular urethane foams are claimed to

be very soft and conformable while still resisting compression set. The new products are offered on a PET liner to add stability and aid die cutting. Applications are expected to include LCD gaskets, lens and cover seals, and speaker and sound management gaskets. Sealing foam meets green procurement requirements Nitto Denko Corp has developed a Super Clean Foam (SFC) material for use in electronic equipment as cushioning and to seal out dirt. The company says this is the first fire-resistant foam sealing material that contains no halogen, and it conforms to the requirements of green procurement. Because it is thin and flexible, the material is also applicable to extremely compact applications. The SFC is produced by forming a thin layer of foam from thermoplastic olefin resin. Product features include: • It contains no halogen, but uses thermoplastic olefin resin to make the foam fire-resistant. The material has obtained fireresistant standard certification UL94 HF1. • It contains no impurities and minimizes negative effect of gas produced. None of the plastics or additives used to produce conventional foam are used in the material. This minimizes the out-gas that can be caused by such impurities. • It is thin and flexible with a minimum cell diameter of around 80 µm. This allows the foam to be made thinner, down to 0.5 mm, without losing its foam properties while also offering superior flexibility. Applications are expected to include dust-proof seals for data terminals and cellular telephones.

Low pressure magnetic face seal introduced Magtite is a new low-pressure rotary shaft seal from James Walker. It uses rare earth magnets to hold a carbon rotary face in positive sealing contact with an optically flat stationary ring of stainless steel. The seal is intended for rotary applications such as blowers, fans, motors, gearboxes and pumps. Suitable for dry or lubricated environments, the seal will operate with a pressure of 3.5 bar on the rotary side or 0.7 bar on the stationary side. Maximum working temperature is 205ºC and shaft surface speeds up to 50.8 m/s. The seals are also said to be easy to install. New bulletin describes PTFE shaft seals Parker Hannifin Seal Group has released a new technical bulletin “Polon PTFE Rotary Flexicase and Flexilip Seals”. FlexiCase seals are designs with an outer metal case used for a variety of rotary oil sealing and dust exclusion applications. FlexiLip seals are constructed from PTFE in a variety of application-specific geometries. The common PTFE compounds, and metal case recommendations, are described for both high pressures and speeds as well as special requirements such as FDA and NSF approval. In Brief Dunlop Precision receives accreditation Dunlop Aerospace Precision Rubber (DAPR) of Leicestershire, UK is now accredited to the new AS9001:2001, version A, aerospace standard for both design and manufacturing. The AS9001 standard was released by the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) in August 2001 and DAPR is among the first UK companies to achieve certification. It is closely based on ISO 9001, 2000 with the addition of a number of aerospace-specific clauses and is strongly supported by industry leaders such as Boeing.
