presence of the catalytic systems containing the above-mentioned metal ion additions gives a high selectivii for the formation of C, hydrocarbons with yields of approximately 36% yield; it is claimed that such yields make possible the application of these systems on an industrial scale. Second International Exhibition-Seminar. “Catalysis 94”

The traditional Exhibition-Seminar “Catalysis-9C was held between September 12-16 in St. Petersburg. The organizers of the Exhibition were Glade International KG (Germany), St. Petersburg Mesre (Russia), and the Boreskov Institute of Catalysis (Russia). In the framework of this Exhibition, the Seminar “Urgent Problems of Catalyst Manufacturing and the Large-Scale Application of Catalysis” was organized by the Boreskov Institute of Catalysis (Novosibirsk) and the Russian Scientific Centre “Applied Chemistry” (St. Petersburg) -the Russian Chemical Society named after D.I. Mendeleev (St. Petersburg Department). The Seminar was held at the Mendeleev Centre in one of St. Petersburg’s University buildings. This centre is of historical interest, situated on the Neva river just opposite the Hermitage and St. Isaac’s Cathedral, near the Kunstkamera, which was built by Peter the Great, The Exhibition was held in the Concert and Sports Complex. Among the participants of the exhibition were such European companies as Procatalyse (France), Engelhard (GB), Sy-Lab. (Austria), Himont (Italy), Vinci Technologies (France), Haldor Topsee (Denmark), MEL Chemicals (GB), Neolab SRL (Italy), Treiapplied catalysis A: General

The Russian companies present were well-known: MNTK Katalizator, Neftekhim, Angarsk Petrochemical Co., AOZT Kalan, A0 Katalizator, AOZT Alfenix, A0 Azot, Kumir, IChP Magtech, AOZT Redment, PITC PM, NPO Spectron, VNIIZhirov, and the Voskresensk Chemical Plant. The Moscow State University and the Institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences as well as GP Catalyst (Ukraine), and Ulbinsk Metallurgical Manufactory (Kazakhstan) also participated in the Exhibition. The Seminar encompassed a plenary session and three sections of oral presentations: “Catalyst Manufacturing Techniques”, “Problems of the Large-Scale Application of Catalysis” and “Production Programs of Some Enterprises from the Russian Federation and Western Companies”. During the Seminar and at the Exhibition, the problems of commercial catalysts, supports and sorbents, production, environmental catalysis, and the design of novel catalytic processes were discussed. Technological equipment for catalyst manufacturing and devices for catalyst characterization and testing were also considered. The most interesting were the plenary lectures of Prof. Parmon (Boreskov Institute of Catalysis, Novosibirsk, Russia) “Russia’s Catalyst Needs, Development and Deployment of New Technologies”, Dr. Ph. Jaeger (RhonePoulenc, Recherches, France) “Influence of Final Calcination Temperature and Calcium Addition on the Properties of TiianaBased Sulfur Recovery Catalysts”, Prof. E.N. Yurchenko (RSC “Applied Chemistry”, St. Petersburg, Russia) “GIPKh Catalysts”, Prof. Z.R. lsmagilov (Boreskov Institute of Catalysis) “New Catalysts and Processes

for Environmental Control”, Prof. TM Yurieva (Boreskov Institute of Catalysis) “Catalyst for Methanol Synthesis. Preparation and Activation Problems”, Prof. V. Lunin and Dr. Yu. Solovetskii (Moscow State University, Russia) “Thermal Radiation Processing of Deactivated Heterogeneous Catalysts”, Prof. 0. Krivoruchko (Boreskov Institute of Catalysis) “A New Low-Waste and Energy-Saving Technology of Catalysts and Supports Manufacturing with the Electron Beam Activation of Oxygen-Containing Solid Compounds”, Prof. G. Kotelnikov “Yarsintez, Yaroslavl, Russia) “Catalysts and Dehydrogenation Processes: Implementation and Application”, Prof. 8. Zolotovskii (Boreskov Institute of Catalysis) “Low-Waste Technology of Alumina Catalysts for Gas Sulfur Isolation”, Prof. 8. Kuznetsov and Dr. M. Schipko (Institute of Natural Organic Raw Materials, Krasnoyarsk, Russia) “New Catalytic Methods for Solid Organic Raw Materials Processing”. About 60 oral contributions were presented. Much attention was focussed on the section “Production Programs of Some Enterprises of the Russian Federation and Western Companies”. Here the participants of the Seminar and Exhibition had the possibility to advertise their research work and data. The participants of the Exhibition Conference “Catalysis-9q had the opportunity to discover recent results in the field of applied catalysis, to exchange research and business information, and to initiate new joint research and production projects. The participants of this event highly appreciated the hearty welcome and goodwill of the organizers. But most of all, the beauty and grandeur of St. Petersburg.

First Polish National Congress on Technology

Prof. K. Kalucki and his co-workers from the Szczecin Polytechnical University (Institute of Inorganic Technology) organized the First Congress on Technology ‘TECHEM 1” which was held in Szczecin (Poland) from 19th to 22nd September, 1994. The Chairman of the Scientific Committee was Prof. M. Taniewski (Silesian Polytechnical University, Gliwice). Almost 406 people from academic institutions and the chemical industry (including a representative of the Polish Ministry of the Trade and Industry) participated in the meeting. The programme of the congress was divided into seven sections: Theoretical bases of chemical technology; Particular chemical technologies - development of the processes and products; Catalysts, catalytic processes, sorbents; Analysis in chemical technology; Chemical technology as a science and teaching course; Chemical technology as a base in the modernisation and development of the chemical industry; and Environment protection, management of by-products and wastes. During the congress, a total of 45 section reports, 121 oral contributionsand 143 posters were presented. In the section on cataiysts, catalytical processes, sorbents, the following reports were included: Catalysis and the chemical industry (Prof. J. Haber - Institute of Catalysis, Cracow); Basic and applied methods for the thermocataiytical conversion of methane to Cz University, Gliwice); Homogeneous catalysis in chemical technology (Prof. J.J. Ziolkowski - Wroclaw University, Wroclaw); Physicochemical methods in the descripVolume 119 No. 2 -
