836080 DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF ACCRIN~TON'S STORM ~ E OVERFLOW TANK Murrel, M D; Daws, G; White, T E Tunn Turm_Ig, V15, N7, JUly 1983, F28-29 As part of a new interceptor sewer for Accrington, Lancashire, UK, the stc~m sewage overflc~ ~as constructed in an enlarged section of the outfall tm~nel. Excavation, mainly in sandstones and siltstones of the lower Coal Measures, was by drill and blast with particular consideration given to nearby sensitive structures. A rockbolt and shotcrete Irimary lining was installed in the overflow tank.

This paper Iresents major geotechnlcal Iroblems in the design, construction, and operation of pipelines within Alberta. Geotechnlcal considerations involved in the location of pipelines and specific methods incorporated in the design to ensure the stability of slopes and prevent erosion are ~resented. Recent improvements of existing methods used in the control of surface and subsurface water are outlined. Me~1.~s used to monitor potentially unstable right-of-way slopes and the specific remedial measures implemented are presented.

A mathematical model for one-dimensional erosio~excavation of a saturated sedimmnt, ~ased on the usual asstm~tions inherent in the classical consolidation thec~y, is examined. Closed-fc~m analytical solutions are fotmd for two dlffererf@ rates of erosion, namely, constant rate of excavation, and excavation rate l~olx~rtional to the square root of time. The results indicate that the development of deficient pore ~ater Iressures is dependent on the rate of soil removal as well as on the sediment sweLli rg potential.

836083 INFLUENCE OF THE IN-SITU STRESS FIELD AND JOINT STIFFNESS ON ROCK WEDGE STABILITY IN U N D ~ R O U N D OPENINGS Crawfcrd, A M; Bray, J W Can Geotech J, V20, N2, May 1983, P276-287 Rock wedges In the roofs of ~cdergrotlr~ excavations may b e w h a U y or partly self-smppc~ting due to the mobilization of shear resistance on dlscontimAitles bo1~xling such wedges. The extent of the mobillzatiom, which occurs as the wedge deforms, is markedly influenced by the magnitrade of the stress field tamgential to the openir~ and the relative stiffness of the intact rock and the shear ar~ normal stiffnesses of the discontinuities. Analytical and n~erical models are described for de~ermimlng 'the upper amd lower bounds of the failure loads for twodimensional asymmetric and syn~etric rock wedges. Experiments conducted on l~hysical models ir~icare that the stability of rock wedges may be substantially reduced by loosening and that the analytical sollxtions may overestimate the load necessary to cause failure. Drivage of two drifts through glacial deposits and lower magnesian limestone required some grouting, while ground f r e e z i ~ was necessary to prevent water ingress from the basal Permian sands present. Ten of the eleven shafts were sunk through the upper magnesian limestone using ground freezing, with the lower magnesian limestone and basal sands heir6 treated by dewatering and grouting from within the shaft.

836087 THEORETICAL SIN/DY OF FORE WATER PRESSURES DEVELOPED IN HYDRAULIC FILL IN MINE SvfOPES Isaacs, L T; Carter, J P Trans Inst Min Mstall (Sect A Min Ini), V92, April 1963 , PA93-AI02 A ~ical model for the hydraulic backfilling of two-dimensional mine stopes is l~resented. The use of the model is demonstrated by ar~lyses in which fill levmls, water levels amd the pore water pressures developed in the voids of the fill material are predicted. The effects on these features of various parameters, such as rate of pouring of the fill, fill permeability and drain location and performance have been investigated.
