Selected papers from those presented at the 14th Nordic Symposium on Tribology (Nordtrib 2010) Storforsen, June 8–11, 2010

Over the years, the Nordic tribology symposia have acquired an international character and grown into a major tribology event. The 1st Symposium was held at Tampere, Finland in 1984 and since then the Nordtrib symposia have been held every two years in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, respectively. The 14th Nordtrib Symposium (Nordtrib 2010) was organised by the Division of Machine Elements of Luleå University of Technology in Sweden from June 8 to 11, 2010. The opening of the symposium along with initial three sessions took place at Luleå University of Technology on 8th June and thereafter the major events of the symposium were held at Storforsen which is famous for being the biggest free-flowing rapids in Northern Europe. These rapids, carrying between 200 and 900 m3 water per second depending on season, were earlier used to transport logs but today its surroundings are part of a nature park. The Symposium venue at Hotel Storforsen was a perfect forum for the tribologists for presenting their latest research and exchange of ideas in a very relaxed and pleasant environment. The symposium attracted 178 participants from 30 countries. In all, 125 papers spread over 19 sessions (including 5 plenary sessions) were presented. These papers covered both the fundamental as well as applied aspects of wide ranging topics such as tribological contacts, friction, wear, tribology of materials, surface engineering, lubrication, lubricants and additives, tribology of machine elements, biotribology, tribometrology and sensors. It was interesting to note that there were as many as 36 contributions pertaining to ‘tribology of machine elements’. The Nordtrib Advisory Board selected papers from these presentations that were found suitable for publication in the journals Wear, Tribology International and Journal of Engineering Tribology, respectively. This special issue of Wear contains papers that

were reviewed and accepted from amongst those presented at the 14th Nordic Symposium on Tribology (Nordtrib 2010) and recommended by the Nordtrib Advisory Board. These papers cover very interesting and wide ranging topics of wear mechanisms (abrasion, fretting, erosion–corrosion, cavitation–erosion in wide ranging applications and environments), tribological materials (sintered low alloy Cr-steel, Cu-based bearing alloys and carbide-free bainitic steels) and surface modification technologies (thermally sprayed, PVD and CVD coatings). It is hoped that the tribologists working with both modelling as well as experimental approaches will find this special issue of Wear interesting and useful. Finally, the organising committee thank all the authors and delegates who made Nordtrib 2010 a highly successful and memorable event. The guest editors of this special issue of Wear gratefully acknowledge all the reviewers for their time and painstaking efforts in reviewing the papers.
