Meeting Report SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REACTIONS AND SEPARATIONS Oiso, Japan, l-5 February 1988 A special seminar was held from 1 st to 5th February, 1988, in Oiso, near Yokohama, Japan on the subject of “Selective Catalytic Reactions and Separations”; this was sponsored by ASPRONC (the Association for the Progress of New Chemistry, an Association of the Japanese Chemical and Oil Industries), and was the fourth of a series of seminars in various fields of chemical science and technology, the previous ones having been about protein engineering, composite materials, and materials for memory. This seminar was organized by Profs. S. Kimura, M. Misono, Y. Moro-oka and K. Tamaru. There were about 80 participants from industry, including 18 lecturers and 3 commentators. Six speakers were invited from abroad: Dr. J.F. Roth (Air Products and Chemicals), Prof. V. Ponec (Leiden University), Prof. I. Ojima (State University of New York), Prof. S.K. Hwang (University of Cincinnati), Prof. G. Belfort (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), and Prof. W.Y. Lee (Seoul National University). The seminar started with introductory remarks by Prof. Misono on the design of practical catalysts at atomic/molecular levels. Dr. Roth stressed in his thought provoking lecture the future importance of shape-selective catalysts (zeolites, etc.), homogeneous complex catalysis and membrane reactors. Prof. Ponec talked about the important subject of the control of selectivity of alloy catalysts. Prof. Hwang reported on the recent advancement of the membrane catalytic reactors and pointed out the importance of catalytic membranes inside of which the catalyst is placed. Prof. Belfort thoroughly reviewed the present status of biomembranes and bioreactors. Layered clays: asymmetric synthesis and separation by use of organometallics: microbial enzymes: host-guest complexes: electro-catalytic organic synthesis: biomimetic oxidation; laser-assisted reactions; decomposition of NO; and activation of methane were among other topics treated.
