In brief USFilter Corp has signed a twoyear agreement to supply mobile water treatment equipment and aftermarket products and services to Calpine Corp. The Siemens’ company will be the preferred supplier of water treatment equipment and services to Calpine’s power plants in the US and Canada. USFilter will provide mobile demineralisation and separations systems, and aftermarket products such as ionexchange resin, reverse osmosis membranes, pre-filter cartridges and carbon. www.usfilter.com Vehicle parts maker Eaton Corp has now completed the purchase of Hayward Industries’ industrial filtration business. Eaton had first announced the acquisition in July, and has recently lost the battle for control of the UK’s domnick hunter (see page 4). www.eaton.com Construction work has started on the El Paso/Fort Bliss desalination project in Texas, USA. The US$87 million project is a public-public partnership. El Paso Water Utilities will build, operate and maintain the facilities, which will begin operating during 2007. The plant will produce 104 000 m3 (27.5 million gallons) per day of potable water, making it one of the largest inland desalination plants in the world.

H2O Innovation finalises Biosor acquisition Canada’s H2O Innovation has completed its acquisition of all the outstanding shares of Biosor Technologies Inc. Through this transaction, the firm acquires exclusive rights to Biosor’s technology in the USA, in addition to expertise developed over the past ten years by the Centre de recherche industrielle du Québec (CRIQ). Biosor is a filtration technology essentially based on peat and wood chips. Its treatment capacity is comprised of various filtration, biological and chemical processes that allow more than 95% purification of the organic pollutants found in municipal, agri-food and agricultural effluents, reports the company. The technology is also in trials for other types of liquid and gaseous effluents.
Biosor’s filtration technology is based on peat and wood chips, the company says.
The technology is patented in Canada and the USA, and patents are pending in Mexico and eight European countries. It is certified as standard by the Ministère du Développement Durable de l’Environnement et des Parcs.
The total value of the deal is C$1 575 000, however the terms of the deal depend upon the annual sales of Biosor reaching a level of C$1 million, says the company. www.h2oinnovation.com / www.biosor.com
Seminar announcement: ‘Improving processes’ The Filtration Society is running a one-day technical meeting – Improving Process Efficiency Through Filter Scale-Up and Evaluation – on the 22 November 2005, in Runcorn, UK. According to the society, process efficiency gains – by increasing
throughput or optimising filtration equipment performance – and cost savings, can be achieved through correct scale-up and evaluation of filtration equipment. Examples and case studies of how process improvements might be achieved through
consideration of separation equipment will be presented. In addition, there will be a demonstration of software designed to help users specify filtration equipment and evaluate process filters.

Foss Mfg files petition for relief facility will remain in operation during the Chapter 11, and the company anticipates no employee layoffs or customer disruptions as a result of the Chapter 11 filing.
Foss Manufacturing Co Inc has filed a petition for relief under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code. Chapter 11 of the code is designed to provide companies with the time and opportunity to reorganise their operations, restructure their debts, obtain new investment capital, or facilitate a sale of all or part of the company on a going concern basis. In conjunction with the filing of the bankruptcy petition, Foss has
filed a request that the Bankruptcy Court approve the use of cash collateral to provide working capital for its operations. The company’s manufacturing
