This introductory text surveys the role transport plays in the economic activity and development of a country. The basic theory of economics is introduced, and then applied to the transport sector. It includes the use of subsidy and the roles of central and local governments in both the IInancing and planning of transport. The urban trafllc congestion problem is looked at from the ecoaomist’s viewpoint, as well as its concomitant, rural isolation. The transport programs and experiences of the British Isles are placed in an international context. The book is primarily aimed at students taking the Qualifying Examination of the Chartered Institute of Transport, and contains reference lists and sample examination questions.

This booklet contains the summary and conclusions of the ECMT seminar held in Paris on 12-13th January, 1983. It is designed for policy decision-makers who am concerned with the development of cut transport and the strategies with which this development could he encouraged or checked, in the light of its advantages and disadvantages. The examples chosen and the measures discussed provide an illustration of the effects of a heavy car density.
