Huge potential in the AEO market in China Although Chinese ethoxylation capacity rose to more than 600,000 tonne/y in 2007, operating rates remain low and there is significant surplus capacity. Production of polyether nonionic surfactants in China totalled about 270,000 tonnes in 2007, with fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ethers (AEOs) accounting for about 150,000 tonnes. Chinese consumption of AEOs in the production of detergents totalled about 130,000 tonnes in 2007, around half of total AEO usage. Production of synthetic detergents in China rose 15.6% to 6.316 M tonnes in 2007. Production of fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether sulfates (AES), which are more effective than AEOs when used in hard water, totalled about 190,000 tonnes in 2007, using about 100,000 tonnes of two of the main AEO varieties, AEO2 and AEO3. Factors affecting development of the AEO sector in China include price increases for raw materials (ethylene oxide and fatty alcohols), the impact of imports, and increased competition. Compared with a price of RMB Yuan 8000/tonne in 2002, the price of ethylene oxide is now RMB Yuan 17,000/tonne. Chinese imports (exports) of organic nonionic surfactants increased from 71,000 tonnes (4000 tonnes) in 2002 to 228,000 tonnes (12,000 tonnes) in 2007. ASSOCIATED PRODUCTS Symbiotic chemicals condition hair of all lengths Symbio quat is a second-generation liquid conditioning agent from Germany-based Dr Straetmans GmbH suitable for application in various hair care and skin care products. The biological symbiosisinspired system is a combination of two natural polysaccharides with distinct quaternization degrees and molecular sizes. The quat offers high performance and good foaming, enhances skin feel when applied in a shower gel, and does not impart slimy character to the formulation. The company has also developed a strong fungicidal cosmetic ingredient called Dermosoft 688 ECO. The ingredient is based on natural resources using proprietary methods endorsed by German and French certification organizations. When combined with bactericidal components from the Dermosoft line, the ingredient delivers outstanding systems against microbiological deterioration of cosmetic products. Sensory emulsions The new Gransil SiW silicone/water microdispersion line derived from a polysilicone-11 base is being launched by Grant Industries to serve as a formulation aid or a primary emulsifier. The materials bestow a rich texture, powdery finish and a soft focus effect on the finished product. Parfums, Cosmetiques Actualites, Jun/Jul 2008, (201), 83

Suppliers’ day introductions The 2008 NYSCC Suppliers’ Day at the Raritan Centre in Edison, NJ, USA emerged as the most successful cosmetics and toiletries event to date, attracting 6000 visitors and 300 exhibitors. Attention on parabens as a preservative continues with the introduction of several new substitute products. McIntyre Group unveiled formaldehyde and paraben-free new preservatives and antimicrobial emollients: Mackaderm GCP, Makstat GCM and Phenagon PBD. Phenagon PBD (INCI: phenoxyethanol, benzoic acid, dehydro acetic acid) is being introduced for use against gram positive or negative bacteria, moulds, fungi and yeasts. It is based on different organic acids and is ideal in the production of personal care products. ISP also unveiled antimicrobial aromatic substances Conarom H-3 and Conarom P and mild preservatives Optiphen BSB-N and Optiphen BSP.
