productnews Composite media configuration provides ever finer filtration Polysep™ II media from Millipore Inc has a triple layer configuration to ensure progressively finer performance in pre-filtration applications. The composite media consists of a borosilicate glass media layer and two cellulosic membranes. The medium offers performance down to 0.1 microns, retaining particulate and colloidal contaminants through mechanical entrapment and adsorption. According to Millipore, the integrated media combine the dirt-holding capacity of a depth filter with the retention efficiency of a membrane filter. The borosilicate glass layer is effective to 1 micron, with the membranes layers offering a 0.2 and 0.1 micron performance, respectively. The progressive action of the system is said to ensure a high particle loading capacity, the ability to retain large particulates and a relatively high flow rate capability, i.e. up to 70 l/min, depending upon what filter system the media is specified with.
Typical applications include buffer preparation, cell culture media and other biotech or R&D laboratory uses. The Polysep II media can be used with standard cartridge filters in 10.16 cm, 25.40 cm, 50.80 cm, 76.20 cm, and 101.60 cm lengths. The system can also be specified with Millipore's Opticap™ XL disposable cartridges and the company's XLT disposable cartridges. The maximum recommended forward differential pressure with these filters is 3.5 bar. The OptiScale® disposable capsules, with a small-scale effective filtration area of 13.8 cm2, can operate at higher pressures of 5.5 bar. The recommended temperature in all instances is 25 °C. The flow rate capability depends on the filter housing selected by the end user and its operational parameters. Contact: Millipore Corp, 290 Concord Road, Billerica, Massachusetts, MA 01821, USA. Series of long-life industrial baghouse filters hits the industrial air market Donaldson Co Inc has introduced a new line of industrial baghouse filters that is said to have a removal efficiency of 99.9% and last twice as long as industry standard polyester (PE) needlefelt bags. Utilizing the awardwinning Durapex™ nonwoven fabric from the Polymer Group Inc, DuraLife™ baghouse filters offer increased operational energy savings and lower maintenance costs. According to Donaldson, the Durapex fabric, which was recognized as the most innovative new filtration medium by the American Filtration and Separations Society in 2003, is instrumental in helping the new bag filters achieve these results. Engineered with PGI's proprietary Apex® technology, the fabric media is created by a hydroentaglement manufacturing technique, which also uses web forming and highly developed finishing techniques to ensure tightly controlled pore-size distribution. Water is used to blend the fibers giving a more uniform material with smaller pore sizes. The nonwoven fabric is designed in accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency's National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for use in the US, which covers 16 May 2004
air filtration systems with performance characteristics down to 2.5 microns. Incorporated into the new Dura-Life range of baghouse filters from Donaldson, the technology enables better surface loading of dust, which prevents penetration deep into the media. The dust can, therefore, be pulsed cleaned more easily from the surface, resulting in lower pressure drops and considerable energy savings. In independent laboratory tests, the Dura-Life bag fabric produces 47% lower emissions than standard PE bag. The new bag filters also produce a lower pressure drop, resulting in annual energy savings of US$5000 per collector. Better surface loading on the Dura-Life baghouse filters also means that they do not become embedded so quickly with dust, reducing the number of bag changes to be carried out, which translates into lower replacement and labour costs, and less production downtime . The Dura-Life filters are designed for the industrial air filtration market, where they can be used to reduce both indoor and outdoor emissions. They can be used across a wide variety of industrial sectors, including the chemical sector, food and drink, rubber, mining, and pulp and paper industries. Dura-Life filter can be installed in Donaldson's baghouse systems or in a wide range of competitor baghouses.
