Shale Oil, Tar Sands and Related Fuel Sources, Advances in Chemistry Series 151. Edited by TEH FU YEN, American Chemical Society, Washington, D. C., 1976. 184 pp., $24.50. This book covers a s y m p o s i u m on shale oil and tar sands which was presented at the 1974 A m e r i c a n Chemical Society meeting in Los Angeles. The papers were updated before this publication in the M o n o g r a p h Series in 1976. The first eight chapters deal with shale oil production and properties. T w o chapters deal with tar sands and the last four chapters deal with specific problems such as biochemical desulfurization, chemical modification of bitumen h e a v y e n d s , hydrocracking of subbituminous coal, and differences a m o n g ozokerites.

This slim book is full of information for the neophyte. It is well p r o d u c e d and a valuable reference for those in the field or those entering the field. Fifty years ago the A C S M o n o g r a p h Series No. 25 on " S h a l e Oil" was the first book on the subject. This book is still a valuable reference. As energy s o u r c e s are now in great d e m a n d , these large and difficult sources will be tapped in increasing a m o u n t s . W e very likely need a n e w m o n o g r a p h on tar s a n d s a n d shale oil to bring us up to date. A. C. ZETTLEMOYER Lehigh University Bethlehem, Pennsylvania 18018
