Holographic information Patent 1 208 057 granted to Holotron Corp. (Aug. 20, 1968) An object signal is produced and received by scanning a point s o u r c e of coherent wave radiation. The object signal and a reference signal are mixed to produce holographic information.

Bore inspection Patent 1 210 213 granted to F o s t e r Wheeler John Brown Boilers Ltd. (Nov. 28, 1967) A t r a n s p a r e n t r o d - s h a p e d light guide made of m a terial with a different r e f r a c t i v e index f r o m the medium in which it is used, has a polished face f o r viewing at one end and an inwardly projecting conical polished face at the other. The device can be used for inspecting b o r e s and cavities with a small diameter.

Optical t y p e w r i t e r Patent 1 204 062 granted to Olympia Werke A. G. (March 6, 1968) I m a g e s a r e projected from any one of an a r r a y of optical fibre conductors to a f u r t h e r flexible conductor. Images conducted through the f i b r e s a r e f o r m e d in a projection plane which may have a.ground glass screen. Seat belt warning Patent 1 206 613 granted to Hoseph Lucas (Industries) Ltd. (March 21, 1968) Optical cables a r e a r r a n g e d so that they meet when the seat belts a r e properly fastened, hence allowing light to be transmitted.

MODULATIONAND BEAM CONTROL Two directional scanning Patent 1 212 388 granted to International Business Machines Corp. (Feb. 20, 1968) Two light beams, each conveying an image of the article being scanned, a r e produced. One of the b e a m s is rotated, so allowing the article to be scanned in two directions without it having to be reorientated.

DETECTION AND TRACKING Holographic detection Patent 1 201 664 granted to Compagnie Generale d'Electrique. (Jan. 26, 1968) The deformation or movement of an object (e.g. a dam) with time is determined by f o r m i n g a hologram of the object and a fixed r e f e r e n c e point, and at a later time making a second hologram. The two holog r a m s a r e then compared.

Speed warning Patent 1 202 597 granted to Joseph Lucas (Industries) Ltd. (Feb, 22.1968) Light is reflected f r o m a r e f l e c t o r on the vehicle speedometer pointer when the pointer r e a c h e s a p r e determined position. Optical cables a r e used to direct light onto the reflector.

DISPLAY

Head-up display for pilots Patent 1 193 191 granted to Thomson-CSF. Luminous m a r k s in a pilot's field of vision move as the drift of the a i r c r a f t changes. The m a r k s ai:e images of reticles, and by moving them in the c o r r e c t way the pilot is able to control the attitude of the aircraft. Light guides Patent 1 203 010 granted to E. Erni. (May 28, 1969) Apparatus f o r supplying light to one or more f i b r e optic bundles involves a halogen lamp fitted into a cavity in a thermally conductive block. Light guides are fitted in respective b o r e s in the block and extend f r o m the cavity to corresponding connections in the fibre-optic bundles.

Shaping l a s e r pulses Patent 1 187 535 granted to United A i r c r a f t Corp. An acoustic~wave interacts with the emitted l a s e r beam and, in conjunction with a reflector, produces a feedback in selected parts of the b e a m to produce various output pulse shapes. Infrared filter Patent 1 201 066 granted to International Polaroid Corp. (Aug. 24, 1967) An infrared optical filter p a r t i c u l a r l y for use with sunglass lenses is f o r m e d as a l a y e r or Coating containing art i n f r a r e d a b s o r b e r with at least one metal complex, on t r a n s p a r e n t plastic sheets. In another form the i n f r a r e d transmitted does not exceed the visible light by more than 5%. Infrared transmitting filter Patent 1 203159 granted to T e s l a Narodni Podnik. (Dec. 4, 1968) An i n f r a - r e d transmitting filter consists of an antireflecting coating of a r s e n i c sulphide on a cadmium antimony plate, and placed in front of the r e c e i v e r of an e l e c t r o - o p t i c a l sensing device.

Light guides Patent 1 203 462 granted to Rank Organisation Ltd. (April 3, 1968) A fibre optic guide penetrates, and is sealed into, the glass envelope of an electric lamp. The other end of the guide is aimed at a photographic negative, the image of which is projected through a lens. Microscope illumination Patent 1 203 625 granted to E . R e h m . (Oct. 26, 1967) The illumination s y s t e m of a m i c r o s c o p e is arranged so that any object may be selectively illuminated from below either along the optical axis or obliquely. Multiple image formation Patent 1 204 169 granted to Texas Instruments Inc. (Dec. 13, 1967) Multiple images of a m a s t e r image a r e f o r m e d by illuminating the m a s e r image with monochromatic light. The light from this is_imaged on to a multiple image g e n e r a t o r in the f o r m of an interference holog r a m of an a r r a y of point sources, at positions corre:; ponding to the position of the images to be formed. Multiple images a r e f o r m e d on a light sensitive element when the m a s t e r image is illuminated.
