Book Reviews Shell Theory. By F. I. Niordson. 1985. Elsevier Science Publishers (North Holland Series), Amsterdam, Holland. 408 pp. Price: US$49/Dfl 160 hardback. (ISBN 0 444 87640 5) The author acknowledges that this book originated as a set of lecture notes for an introductory course on shell theory for students of mechanical engineering. Originally in Danish, the work was translated and modified prior to publication. While having ~shells' in the title, the book also contains significant sections on plates (as flat shells) and the reader may find the title misleading in this respect. Plates are treated as a special ease of shells with a simpler solution procedure. The book is basically mathematical covering the governing equations for different classes of problem (in tensor notation) and includes solution techniques of a mathematical nature. It is difficult to see this book as an undergraduate text book for civil engineering students: there is far more material than would ever be offered in a course at this level (at least in the UK). It is possibly suitable for postgraduate level, but even then the material considered is rather extensive and mathematical. The reviewer is not familiar with the degree to which the analysis of shells is taught in other countries and it is difficult to comment on the text from this point of view. As a reference book, however, it is well presented and thorough in its approach.
