Shepherd Color has added to its Arctic® infrared-reflective pigment line, launched last year [Additives for Polymers (ADPO), September 2003], with the introduction of Brown 10P857. The company says the new pigment is a clean, red-brown shade that can be used in a wide variety of plastics applications where highly chromatic and durable colour is essential. According to Shepherd Color, trends in the building, construction and automotive industries demand colours that simulate wood finishes, as well as darker, earthier tones. Brown 10P857 reportedly offers a “highly robust yet economic way to incorporate colour” into even the most demanding projects where iron oxides, typically used to match such colours, do not meet requirements or cannot be used. The brown pigment is said to have excellent weathering performance making it highly suitable for any exterior application. The company says that the movement to the use of lead-free stabilizers in PVC is placing limits and constraints on the use of traditional iron oxide pigments, and that Brown 10P857 is an ideal replacement. In addition to its durability, Brown 10P857 has a low heat build-up of 25°C in its mass-tone, making it useful for the darker colours that are currently in demand. The new pigment is also reported to have outstanding heat stability, capable of withstanding the “extreme demands of pigment performance when processing engineering polymers”. Brown 10P857 has wide compatibility with all polymer types and alloys, is very easy to disperse and provides the best colour consistency available, Shepherd says. The company believes the pigment will be especially beneficial to the vinyl industry because of its lower utilization costs, dispersibility characteristics, low heat build-up and high IR reflectivity, durability and the proven performance of the CI Pigment Brown 33 chemistry. In other recent company news, Shepherd Color has acquired the Ceramic and Glass Division of General Color and Chemical, and has renamed

Techmer PM formulates super-clear antiblock for packaging Techmer PM has developed a new super-clear formulation of its antiblocking agent for extruded films, pouches and bags. Techsperse™ PM11840E4 antiblock is said to offer an “unsurpassed”, sparkling clarity for product packaging and marketing applications where visual appeal is critical. The new antiblock additive meets FDA requirements for use with all foods and medical products. It is provided in a proprietary polyolefinbased carrier resin that can be processed at temperatures up to 221°C. As an extruded film cools, Techsperse PM11840E4 is in the film’s surface creating a super-transparent antiblocking film with reduced sticking and friction, which is especially important for films that will be used with high-speed packaging equipment. To assure maximum clarity and freedom from haze, the manufacturer says the pellets should not be stored for more than six months. A strict first-in, first-out usage pattern is therefore recommended. Loading levels will vary for different films and package designs. Techmer PM says it will work with customers to develop individual recipes that optimize consumption on this premium additive.
