SIA warns Alaska on identification
T
he Security Industry Association (SIA) has opposed a proposed bill that would require prior written consent for the use of biometric technology in identification applications in Alaska. In a letter to the senator sponsoring the bill, the SIA states that in its view the legislation targets biometric technology unfairly and will result in the use of less secure identity solutions. The SIA is developing a framework that will help educate policymakers, consumers and industry stakeholders on technology and privacy related issues.

Texas counties share immigration data
U
S Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is using a new biometric information-sharing capability in five more Texas counties to help immigration officials identify aliens, both lawfully and unlawfully present in the US, who are taken into custody. Previously, fingerprint-based biometric records were taken of individuals charged with a crime
and booked into custody and checked for criminal history information against the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS). Now, through enhanced information sharing between DOJ and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), fingerprint information submitted through the state to the FBI will be automatically checked against both the FBI criminal history records in IAFIS and the biometrics-based immigration records in DHS’ Automated Biometric Identification System. If fingerprints match those of someone in DHS’ biometric system, the new automated process notifies ICE. ICE determines the individual’s immigration status and takes appropriate enforcement action.
