Business digest: Dow unveils plan to reorganize Rohm and Haas USA-based Dow Chemical plans to restructure Rohm & Haas after it has completed the acquisition. The deal is anticipated to be finalised in early 2009. Six business groups will comprise the renamed Rohm & Haas Advanced Materials Division. These are coatings, building and construction, paper and textiles, speciality packaging and films, designed polymers and separation technologies, and electronic materials. AkzoNobel targeting growth in India AkzoNobel intends to expand its presence in the Indian market by setting up a new coatings production unit in India. The plant will produce coil and speciality plastic coatings. This plant is planned to be built in Hoskote, near Bangalore with its existing marine and protective coatings, powder coatings and coil coatings manufacturing units. This new plant will thus increase the company’s coil coatings’ production capacity. These coil coatings find their utility in high performance steel and aluminium products, used for the construction business in India and its neighbouring countries. The first phase of the project is scheduled for completion by early 2010. Presently, AkzoNobel garners a total income of around €200 M in India and looks ahead to increase this value significantly in the coming years. employees in India. The company operates six production units, two research laboratories and around twelve sales offices in India.

DuPont established its Star Coater network of professionals using powder paints in the USA in 2003. The 2nd country was France in 2007. In France the Star Coater network has 57 members in 38 departments. These 57 are from a total of 650 such professionals in France. Some of the DuPont Powder Coatings France products are discussed: Alesta Cool improves the reflection of infrared radiation from some dark colours, and a primer Alesta without zinc. DuPont and Agion Technologies, Wakefield, MA, USA, have launched Alesta AM as an antimicrobial. Alesta AC ULB is an acrylic powder paints for very low temperatures.

Thailand based Jotun Powder Coatings intends to tap into the hospital market and boost its sales volumes in China to preserve growth in 2009. Orders from the steel sector, which accounts for 85% of the company’s revenue, noticeably diminished. The company aims to generate Baht 720 M in sales revenue in 2008, up 12% against 2007 figures. Jotun plans to lift sales volumes in China by 10 tonnes/mo in 2009 from the current 23 tonnes/mo.
