World’s largest chemicals development planned for Abu Dhabi
T
he International Petroleum Investment Co (Abu Dhabi, UAE) and Borealis AG have signed a memorandum of understanding along with Abu Dhabi Investment Council to prepare jointly for the first phase of the development of a planned new Chemicals Industrial City to be located in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates. The multi-billion-dollar project comprises a world-scale naphtha cracker, downstream propylene and ethylene derivatives; a world-scale reformer, xylene, benzene, cumene, phenol and derivatives units. On completion of the first phase, expected in 2013, the complex will be the largest and most integrated of its kind in the world.
Borouge expansion planned
B
orouge has initiated the feasibility study for Borouge 3: a further expansion of its polyolefin operations in Abu Dhabi to add approximately 2.5 million tonnes per year of capacity by 2014. The proposed expansion would enable Borouge, a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Co and Borealis, to meet the growing demands of specific polyethylene and polypropylene markets in the Middle East and Asia. Included in the Borouge 3 development scheme is a low density polyethlene unit to produce high performance material for wire & cable applications.
Sibur chooses PP technology

ibur LLC has selected INEOS’s Innovene PP Process for a new 200 000 tpa polypropylene plant to be constructed at the production site of Tomskneftekhim LLC, Tomsk, Russian Federation. The Tomsk plant will produce a full range of homopolymer, random and impact copolymers and is expected to start production in 2012.
Feasability study looks at Russian chemical plants JV to build ermany-based Evonik Industries chloromethanes G AG and the Russian JSC Sibur plant in India Holding, have agreed to start an exclusive feasibility study regarding the possible construction of a facility to produce propylene oxide (PO), together with hydrogen peroxide, for use in the Russian Federation. The study is to be completed in the coming months and will determine possible locations and capacities. Sibur is considering the construction of a PO plant that uses the new HPPO process, which produces propylene oxide from hydrogen peroxide and propylene in a low-cost and ecologically sound manner. Evonik and the engineering company Uhde, Dortmund, Germany, jointly developed this HPPO process and are now licensing it to other chemical companies.

ow and Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd have signed a joint venture agreement for the construction, operation and ownership of a 200 000 tpa chloromethanes manufacturing facility in Gujarat, India. The agreement allows Dow and GACL to complete a study, begin work on definitive agreements and work towards financial closure which is expected to be completed by late 2008. Operational in 2011, the new production unit would be located at Dahej, Gujarat on the western coast of India. The parties will form a 50:50 joint venture company to manage local permitting processes.

Offshore contract award in Nigeria

aipem has won the contract for the umbilicals, flowlines, risers and oil loading terminal activities for the subsea development of Usan deepwater field, located off the coast of Nigeria, about 160 km south of Port Harcourt. The contract is worth in excess of US$1.3 billion and has been awarded by Elf Petroleum Nigeria Ltd (Total). It encompasses the engineering, procurement, construction, installation, pre-commissioning, assistance to commissioning and start-up of the subsea umbilicals (72 km), flowlines (61 km) and risers connecting the 42 subsea wells to the FPSO, along with the oil loading terminal, consisting of an offloading buoy and two offloading lines, and part of the FPSO anchoring system.
Pipeline brings Alaska gas to market

P and ConocoPhillips have combined resources to start Denali – The Alaska Gas Pipeline. The pipeline will move approximately four billion cubic feet of natural gas per day to markets, and will be the largest private sector construction project ever built in North America. The project consists of a gas treatment plant on Alaska’s North Slope and a large-diameter pipeline that travels over 700 miles through Alaska, and then into Canada through the Yukon Territory and British Columbia to Alberta.
