resists contamination Good protection and lubrication properties are claimed for a machine tool slideway lubricant introduced by Rocol of Leeds, UK. Rocol Ultraglide lubricants are formulated to demulsify from the cutting fluid, so resisting coolant contamination whilst preventing the formation of deposits which can cause oilway blockages and result in damage to the machine tool. Available in two viscosity grades, IS0 VG 68 and IS0 VG 220, the lubricants can be purchased in 5, 25, 100 and 200 1 packs.

Meeting
examines
surface stability
A one-day educational meeting on Surface Stability: Oxidation, Corrosion, Erosion, Wear will take place on 6 September 1989 at the Institute of Metals’ headquarters in London, UK. This meeting is one in a series entitled Characterization of HighTemperature Materials. Its objectives are to highlight the degradative processes that can occur in materials used in advanced engineering applications, such as aircraft engines, land-based power generation equipment and chemical plant, and to indicate methods by which eealistic evaluations of materiai performance can be made prior to utilization. Six prcscntations will examine: surface stability of materials used in aero-engine applications corrosion control in power plants oxidation, corrosion and erosion testing of high-temperature materials oxide characterization for life prediction the testing and evaluation of materials in tribology surface analysis of advanced materials and their degradation products. A joint venture engineering company has been formed by Foster Wheeler Corporation, whose headquarters are in Clinton, NJ, USA, and NPO Grozneftechim, an institute in Grozny in the North Caucasian area of the USSR. Known as Hydrocarbon Engineering Technolgies (HYTEC), the new company will operate under the auspices of the USSR Ministry of Oil Refining and Petrochemical Industries. NOP’s strengths are in heavy oil and lubrication oil refining technologies. HYTEC will begin operations at Grozny in the near future, and thereafter will carry out modernization and expansion projects for refineries in the USSR. Bearings operate
engineering
at 800°C
Self-cleaning roller bearings manufactured by Eich of Hattingen, FRG, have been running troublefree in a continuous slab furnace at 800°C without lubrication for more than one year. This has been possible because Eich uses a material with a Vickers hardness of 410 DPH in its natural state and 138 DPH at 800°C. This hardness is sufficient to take a weight of 3 tonnes in a fourwheeled wagon with an axle diameter of 90mm. The design of the bearing application and the bearing surround also play an important role in operational capability at such high temperatures. Eich specializes in heavy-duty bearing applications, for example high temperatures and under conditions of high impact stress.

A rotating-disc tramp-oil removal s~wern introduced by Filtermist is said to provide a simple and economical means of recovering tramp oil that, fiwms on the surf&e qf’machine tool coolant tanks. Collected oil is removed by scrapers and discharged to a catch tank. The ‘Filterwheel ’ system eliminates bacteriological growth and odours qften associated wtith soluble cutting flu&.
