EnPro Industries agrees to acquire PSI
I
n the USA, EnPro Industries Inc has signed an agreement to acquire the business of Pipeline Seal and Insulator Inc (PSI) and its affiliates, a privatelyowned group of companies that manufactures products which ensure the safe flow of fluids through pipeline transmission and distribution systems worldwide. PSI primarily serves the global oil and gas industry, and water and wastewater infrastructure markets. The business manufactures flange sealing and flange isolation products; pipeline casing spacers and isolators; casing end seals; the original Link-Seal modular sealing system for sealing pipeline penetrations into walls, floors, ceilings and bulkheads; hole-forming products; manhole infiltration sealing systems; and safety-related signage for pipelines. It has facilities in the USA, Germany and the UK, and will be included in EnPro’s Garlock family of companies. The transaction is being consummated by a number of domestic and international EnPro subsidiaries not involved in Garlock Sealing Technologies Llc’s asbestos claims resolution process. ‘PSI will be a significant addition to the Garlock family of companies and to their expertise in industrial sealing,’ commented Steve Macadam, President and Chief Executive Officer, EnPro. ‘The acquisition will expand these companies’ manufacturing capabilities, increase their participation in global oil and gas markets and provide them with a larger and well established presence in water and wastewater markets, where substantial demand is likely
to be created by infrastructure improvements in coming years. At the same time, the acquisition will provide PSI with access to many new markets and improved opportunities for growth.’ Contacts: EnPro Industries Inc, 5605 Carnegie Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28209-4674, USA. IN BRIEF Hardide Coatings appoints non-executive director Hardide Coatings Ltd has appointed Bruce Robinson as a non-executive director. He will serve on both the audit committee and the combined remuneration and nomination committee. Robinson has extensive experience of the international oil and gas industry and growing technology-based businesses, says the firm. Graham Hine, Chief Executive Officer, Hardide Coatings, commented: ‘Bruce’s experience of growing small technology-based businesses will assist our strategy to develop new and diversified applications for the Hardide coating technology. His engineering background and commercial understanding of the oil and gas industry is particularly relevant as we capitalise on opportunities for growth in this sector.’ Techlok sealring colour coding system abandoned Vector International Ltd reports that after many years of applying a colour code system to its polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coatings on Techlok sealrings, these products will be now coated black, irrespective of the material grade. By removing colour coding, it will become mandatory for all users to formally identify the sealring material grade by inspecting the marking data which are hard-stamped on the parts. While formal marking data have always been present, there is evidence that “casual” identification, using colour, has become accepted in the market place, and this has led to confusion as not all suppliers have followed the original colour coding scheme, says the company. NEWS Aerospace Standard (NAS) 1613 Revision 5 Specification. The certification, which establishes the specifications for elastomer seal elements that are used in hydraulic systems using phosphate ester fluids, applies to all commercially available phosphate ester hydraulic fluids. The firm’s E454 black compound is intended for NAS-1611-XXXA and NAS-1612-YYA (A-code) series O-rings. Developed by Simrit in 2005, the compound is used in the following applications: commercial aircraft hydraulic flight-control units (primary and secondary); power units and pumps; and aircraft braking systems. According to the company, certification was achieved after a major manufacturer of flight-control power units asked for the material to be tested to the NAS 1613 Specification. As a result, it was tested on all type 5 fluids. ‘Our latest certification highlights Simrit’s dedication to developing and manufacturing sealing materials that meet our customers’ and the aerospace industries’ demanding needs,’ said Dr Robert Keller, Materials Development Manager, Simrit. ‘In the case of our E454 compound, the material’s test results were one of the key reasons a leading aerospace manufacturer chose to work with us.’ The NAS 1613 specification covers elastomeric seals used in phosphate ester hydraulic fluids, which are widely used in aircraft for hydraulically boosted primary and secondary flight controls and hydraulic brake systems. The seals involved are especially critical, since leakage of the phosphate ester hydraulic fluid is flight safety critical for hydraulic controls in all stages of an aircraft’s operation – taxi, take-off, climb, cruise, descent, landing and braking. The NAS-1613 specification is one of the most rigorous and extensive in the sealing industry, says Simrit. It was written to assure long-term seal performance through a wide temperature range – from the frigid air of high-altitude cruise flight to the extremely high temperatures experienced by anti-lock braking during landing. Publications of Interest UK seals and gaskets industry – what is in store for 2011?
A
s the UK seals and gaskets sector emerged from the depths of recession in 2010 a fragmented industry appeared from the chaos, says market
industry analyst and research company Plimsoll Publishing Ltd. According to new research by the firm, the market is polarised between those getting it right and those struggling to recover. David Pattison, senior analyst and author of the analysis, explained: ‘Now that the storm is lifting we have been able to assess the damage left behind. There are 35 companies that are in parlous state and starting the new year clinging on for dear life. We have rated them as ‘danger’ accordingly.’ ‘Falling demand was the final nail in the coffin for many. The mistake they made though was to not make those painful cuts early enough to protect their business.’ However, with economic recovery under way the number of companies rated as ‘strong’ is rising to 126. Pattison continued: ‘We rated these companies as strong in our latest report. In fact, many of them retained a strong rating throughout the recession. They have managed to be commercially successful without jeopardising their financial stability. While others fail around them, they are in pole position to capitalise in 2011.’ The ‘Plimsoll Industry Analysis – Seals & Gaskets’ gives an instant performance rating on the top 230 companies in the market. Each firm has been rated as ‘strong’, ‘good’, ‘mediocre’, ‘caution’ or ‘danger’ according to its latest performance. A graphical and written analysis explains which companies are in trouble and which ones are succeeding.
