Automatic filtration for nitrate removal systems

Filtration+Separation May 2005

New compact CD Force decanter from Westfalia energy consumption. As with other CD Force units, the UCD 345 has the main motor located beneath the housing while the secondary motor is mounted on the frame.

Bollfilter UK Limited’s Boll 6.18 automatic filtration systems can help protect Ion Exhange Plants, claims the company, which is based in Colchester, Essex, UK. Chemical elements, such as nitrate and arsenic can occur naturally in ground water. In some areas, naturally occuring nitrate is added to by agriculture – through manure from livestock and fertilisers. According to Bollfilter, any water borehole identified at risk from nitrates or arsenic is normally fitted with an Ion Exhange System to remove the chemical elements and ensure safe drinking water. In order for the process to operate efficiently, the Ion Exhange resin vessels must be kept free from solid particles. Bollfilter says that its Boll 6.18 automatic filter can help protect Ion Exhange Systems from potential blocking or damage from solids. By pumping raw water from the borehole to the Ion Exhange vessels through a Boll automatic filter, all solid particles (down to 50 mu m) will be automatically removed. Boll automatic filters feature a self-cleaning, back-flushing design that ensures efficiency and long life without the need for regular cleaning or maintenance. They are thus suitable for protecting water treatment plants – even in unmanned situations, Bollfilter reports. In addition, by installing a Bol automatic filtration system for nitrate or arsenic removal via Ion Exghange, the life of the resin in the vessels is extended and the requirement for resin regeneration reduced, the company reports. • Bollfilter manufactures a range of filters for applications including water, oil, lubricants and chemicals.

Westfalia Separator Ltd has launched its UCD 345 dewatering decanter. Westfalia says that the decanter has a bowl diameter of 340 mm and a dewatering capacity up to 15m3/hr and is larger than the company’s Crocodile UCD 305. The decanter is designed for use in municipal waste water treatment plants and large industrial wastewater facilities.

The UCD 345 is the fifth member of the new CDForce range and its performance approaches that of larger 400 mm diameter machines with more compactness, the company reports. Westfalia says that it has an improved price/performance ratio, greater ease of access for maintenance and cleaning, a user friendly operation and lower

The V belt drives operate without an intermediate clutch. The compact design facilitates fast replacement of bowl, scroll and bowl bearings, either individually or as complete assemblies. Exchanging a regulating plate only takes a few minutes. Westfalia states that the CD345 has been designed for minimum downtime and ease of service and with a significant reduction in the number of parts. They are said to offer trouble free operation in municipal and industrial waste water treatment.

Single, duplex, multiplex filters available Axium Process’ Pure-Screen wedge wire stainless steel filter range can be fabricated to customer specification and includes duplex, multiplex and jacketed filter options, the company reports. The filters, which have a robust design and are manufactured in 316L stainless steel, are suitable for temperature sensitive applications such as chocolate production; for critical applications where filter failure or collapse is not an option; and for applications where product

smoothness and consistency are essential. The filters are easy to maintain, have no moving parts and require no tools for access or cleaning, Axium says. Interruption to production can be considerably reduced with the introduction of a Pure-Screen duplex filter which is also available as a stand alone design complete with support framework, according to the company. Available in a 4in body design as standard, the PureScreen filter range employs no O rings, and has a metal to metal

seal design which ensures that the filter element can be removed easily and without sticking. Elements are interchangeable and are available as standard from 25 up to 3000 micron. Standard filter options include a 90 deg, inline or straight through design as well as the Pure-Screen Compact filter which is designed for use in confined areas or where flow rates are low. Sample valves, drain or vent valves can be integrated into any of the options as can isolation or back flush valves if required.
