Preface

Sixth International Symposium on Hazards, Prevention, and Mitigation of Industrial Explosions: Twelfth International Colloquium on Dust Explosions and Seventh Colloquium on Gas, Vapor, Liquid and Hybrid Explosions This special issue of the Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries contains selected papers from the Twelfth International Colloquium on Dust Explosions, and the Seventh Colloquium on Gas, Vapor, Liquid and Hybrid Explosions. These two colloquia jointly formed the Sixth International Symposium on Hazards, Prevention, and Mitigation of Industrial Explosions, which was held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada from August 27–September 1, 2006. The local organizing committee for the symposium was chaired by Prof. Paul Amyotte of Dalhousie University (Halifax, Canada), with Prof. Michael Pegg (also of Dalhousie University) serving as technical program chair. The international organizing committee was chaired by Prof. Piotr Wolanski of Warsaw University of Technology (Warsaw, Poland). The symposium was sponsored and organized by Dalhousie University with additional sponsorship from the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia. The dust explosion colloquium series was initiated by and is still coordinated by Prof. Wolanski, with the colloquia initially being held in Poland: Baranow (1984), Jadwisin (1986), Szczyrk (1988), Porabka-Kozubnik (1990), and Pultusk (1993). Subsequent colloquia were held in Shenyang, China (1994), Bergen, Norway (1996), Schaumburg, USA (1998), Tsukuba, Japan (2000), Bourges, France (2002), and Cracow, Poland (2004). Similarly, in 1981 Prof. John Lee (McGill University) initiated the International Specialist Meeting on Fuel-Air Explosions, held in Montreal, Canada. A second and similar meeting was held in Bergen in 1996 in conjunction with the Seventh International Colloquium on Dust Explosions. The two meetings in Bergen occurred under the name of the International Symposium on Hazards, Prevention, and Mitigation of Industrial Explosions (ISHPMIE). This tradition of joint colloquia under the ISHPMIE banner has continued through the symposia in 0950-4230/$ - see front matter r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Schaumburg, Tsukuba, Bourges, Cracow, and now Halifax. The Sixth ISHPMIE was aimed at again bringing under one roof, practitioners dealing with a variety of potential hazards that can lead to industrial explosions—dusts, gases, vapors, liquids, and hybrid mixtures. The majority of the papers delivered at the symposium are presented here in this special issue of the journal. Consistent with the meeting title, the papers cover a range of prevention and mitigation strategies from several perspectives—experimental work, modeling efforts, fundamental studies, and practical applications. The papers appear in the same order as in the symposium proceedings, which mirror the sessions in which the papers were actually presented. All papers appearing in the special issue were peer-reviewed and subsequently revised prior to publication here. Thus, the content of most papers (and the actual title of some) will be somewhat different from the presented paper. The essence of the presented research is, however, retained in all cases. The authors and the many reviewers are acknowledged with gratitude for their diligence in ensuring the quality of the final product. It is hoped that the current issue of the journal will serve as a timely resource on the subject of industrial explosions. Given the truly international flavour of the symposium— with researchers from 15 countries in attendance— an appreciation will hopefully be gained for the scope of explosion research worldwide. Much has been accomplished in this field, but many problems remain to be solved and many challenges remain to be taken on. There clearly exists a compelling need for research aimed at finding practical solutions to deal with the prevention and mitigation of industrial explosions. In conclusion, the international explosion research community is invited to participate in the Seventh ISHPMIE, to be held in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2008 with Prof. Sergey Frolov chairing the local organizing

committee. The symposium will consist of the Thirteenth International Colloquium on Dust Explosions, and the Eighth Colloquium on Gas, Vapor, Liquid and Hybrid Explosions. Further details will be forthcoming and readers are encouraged to consult future issues of the journal for updated information.
