TECHNOLOGY Sizing for aerospace yarns
In brief ■ WebCore Technologies
LLC has announced that its TYCOR® W core material products have earned a Certificate of Approval by Germanischer Lloyd (GL) for use in the manufacture of composite wind turbine blades. The certification by GL includes the design and manufacture of TYCOR W products at WebCore’s manufacturing facility in Miamisburg, Ohio, USA. ■ Advanced Composites Group Ltd (ACG) is launching an autoclave tooling prepreg system offering thermal cycling capability up to 200ºC. The new product, LTM202, offers low temperature initial curing options from 45°C, but with optimised tack levels. LTM202 is reported to be easier and cleaner to handle and does not suffer from problems such as transfer to gloves, knife blades, etc., that can hinder progress when working with other systems. ■ JETCAM International has appointed Vigsent as a distributor for its range of CAD CAM software to the aerospace market in Korea. JETCAM Expert software is said to support virtually every CNC punching, laser, plasma, routing, waterjet and flatbed cutting machine available today, allowing users to program any combination of CNC machines with a single CAM system. ■ Lewcott Corporation has announced that its PSR133 phenolic resin conforms to the MIL-DTL-64154, Revision B military standard. This specification covers a glass fibre fabric reinforced phenolic laminate for use in composite armour systems. ■ Engineering simulation specialist ANSYS and engineering software provider VISTAGY Inc have integrated ANSYS® 13.0 Composite PrepPost™ and FiberSIM® 2010 composites engineering software to enable the more efficient optimisation of composite parts, assemblies and structures. This integration

is said to allow customers to exchange detailed layup information between design and analysis quickly and accurately. As a result, users can optimise parts, assemblies and structures more efficiently. ■ Automated Dynamics, a manufacturer of advanced composite structures and high performance composite processing equipment, has completed registration to AS9100, the quality management system for the aerospace industry. Automated Dynamics’ growth has largely been attributable to work performed for the aerospace industry and the development of patented automated robotic winding (ROWS) and automated fibre placement (AFP) technologies for the manufacture of advanced composite structures. ■ Firehole Composites is opening a satellite office in Seattle, Washington. Headquartered in Laramie, Wyoming, USA, Firehole supplies computer-aided simulation software and services for composite materials to the aerospace, defence, automotive and energy industries. The new Seattle office will offer technical customer support, training and software sales as well as expanded, on-site collaboration with industry partners.
AGY IS introducing a new direct sizing system for E-glass yarns. It is initially available on the company’s DE75 yarn which is used primarily in aerospace fabrics. Building on experience with its S-2 Glass® direct-sized products, AGY developed the new sizing system, called 947, for yarns used primarily in aerospace applications. Fibres with 947 sizing can be woven into fabric and used in composite applications without additional finishing. Yarns produced with the new 947 sizing have significantly higher tensile strengths than their counterparts coated with traditional oil and starch sizes, reports AGY, a US headquartered producer of glass fibre reinforcements. Also, because fabrics made from 947-coated yarns need not undergo the heat treatments or other cleaning processes that can erode fabric integrity, they
can contribute considerably more strength to the composite materials into which they are incorporated. AGY claims that unidirectional standard general purpose epoxy laminates manufactured with this fibre have an ASTM 3039 tensile strength of 200 ksi (1379 MPa), a 40% improvement over traditional E-glass yarns; and an ASTM D3410 compressive strength of 125 ksi (862 MPa), a 45% improvement over traditional E-glass yarns. 947 is compatible with epoxy and phenolic resins, and also with thermoplastics. It has the potential to be used in the development of hybrid glass and carbon fibre fabrics. Initially available on AGY’s DE75 yarn, the sizing will soon be offered on other yarns. AGY; www.agy.com
■ Huber Engineered Materials and Almatis Inc have reached an agreement under which Almatis will toll produce a number of its speciality flame retardant products for Huber. The Almatis products involved include Hydral® 710, Hydral® PGA and SpaceRite® aluminium trihydroxide products. The Hydral products are used as a flame retardant and smoke suppressant for thermoset and thermoplastic materials as well as elastomeric copolymers. Huber will be the sales and marketing contact for the products and assumes responsibility for technical support.
