Kemira invests in China
K
emira is increasing its production capacity of calcium propionate used for feed and food industries by establishing a production site in China. The site’s production capacity will be 15000 mt, and it will be ready by year end 2008 at Kemira’s site in Yixing, East China. The investment includes also production capacity for feed additives mixtures. Kemira produces calcium propionate in Tiel, the Netherlands. Calcium propionate is a salt used as a preservative in food and feed industries. Its global consumption is increasing steadily as the standard of living and population is growing, especially in Asia. Calcium propionate is used at an increasing pace for industrial feed preservation.

All engineering work including civil design will be carried out by Aker Kvaerner’s Engineering Services’ business in Stocktonon-Tees. Scope of services also includes supply of specialist advanced digestion thermal hydrolysis equipment and performance testing after commissioning. Engineering will start immediately with a project completion date set for June 2009. Plant start up is expected in December 2008.
PULP & PAPER
Kemira to boost pigment production
K
emira is increasing its production of calcium sulfate pigments in Siilinjärvi by 25 000 tons to 175 000 tons. The investment is worth 4.9 million. The project includes a new production line and a wet-refining unit in Siilinjärvi and pilot-scale research equipment at the Espoo research center in Finland. Kemira’s paper pigments production plants are located in Finland, Siilinjärvi and in Spain, Besalu. The company’s new filler and coating pigment solutions have been developed for the manufacture of high-quality magazine papers. The new pigment technology enables paper industry customers to save in raw materials consumption and improve efficiency.
OIL & GAS
UK gas terminal project announced
B
P has announced plans for significant investment in its southern North Sea business which will lead to an increase in recoverable gas reserves and create opportunities for further development offshore. The Dimlington Onshore Compression & Terminals Integration project will see some £125 million invested in new gas compression facilities at the BP-operated terminal which receives gas from fields in the southern North Sea. This new equipment will reduce pipeline pressure between the offshore fields and the terminal allowing the gas fields to increase production. BP expects remaining recoverable reserves in West Sole and Amethyst fields to increase by around 30%.
The investment and new configuration will replace the existing facilities at the adjacent - unmanned - Easington Terminal allowing this terminal to be closed and decommissioned. Easington currently receives gas from the West Sole, Hyde, Newsham and Hoton fields and passes it to neighbouring Dimlington.
Jacobs to design sulfur recovery unit
J
acobs Engineering Group Inc has received a contract to provide the basic design package for a 900 ton per day (TPD) sulfur recovery unit (SRU) for the Khursaniyah Gas Plant in Saudi Arabia. The new SRU will use Jacobs’ proprietary SUPERCLAUS(R) technology to recover sulfur from acid gas feed streams to produce molten elemental sulfur. It will be designed to achieve 99% sulfur recovery at the end of a 2-year run. This 900 TPD SRU train will be added in parallel to three SUPERCLAUS(R) trains now under construction. Together, the four units will recover 3600 TPD of sulfur during normal operations.
