a b s t r a c t Applications and services for pervasive computing have been dramatically grown and have contributed extensively to our daily experiences in recent years. Smart systems, devices, and spaces are proactive for ubiquitous and pervasive computing. Smart information technology (IT) is also an outcome of the state of the art and novel mobile and ubiquitous computing technologies that include highly capable handheld device, pervasive and personal device, etc. This special issue will be a trigger for further related research and technology improvements in pervasive and ubiquitous computing using smart devices and services. This special issue called for original papers describing the latest developments, trends, and solutions of smart devices and spaces for pervasive computing including real-time operating systems (OS), tiny OS and middleware supports, mobile system performance, trustworthy Internet and communications, agents and mobile and pervasive services, among others. In particular, this special issue focuses on a remote control and media-sharing system, flash storage-based smart system, heterogeneous mobile OS, and prediction and auto-execution system for pervasive computing. 1. Introduction Ubiquitous and pervasive computing have emerged rapidly as an exciting new paradigm, and influenced every aspect of our lives and cultures. Smart IT is also an outcome of a state of the art and novel ubiquitous and pervasive technologies that include highly capable handheld device, pervasive and personal device or cellphone with advanced features such as iPhone OS, Android, Linux Mobile, Windows Mobile/Phone operation system, access to the Internet, and other computer-like processing capabilities similar to personal computer. Recently, smartphones have been widely used and are reaching over 4 billion subscribers these days due to their innovative capabilities of supporting many valuable applications and handheld mobile Internet services. On the other hand, the rapid growing trends of smartphones throughout the past several years have contributed to increasing ubiquitous pervasive computing for providing a variety of convergence services, playing a key role to connect with smart and intelligent computing devices. They range from the micro architecture level via the system software level up to the application-specific architecture level. Aspects such as real-time systems, OS, FPGA programming, programming languages, communications, mobile systems, parallel and distributed architectures as well as additional subjects in the computer and system architecture areas fall within the scope of this special issue. The technology will not be a main focus, but its use and relevance to particular designs will be. Case studies are welcome but must contribute more than just a design for a particular piece of software. All submitted papers were peer-reviewed and selected on the basis of both their quality and their relevance to the theme of this special issue. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.sysarc.2014.08.001 1383-7621/Ó 2014 Published by Elsevier B.V.
We have received many manuscripts. Only four outstanding manuscripts among them were finally selected for this special issue. Each manuscript selected was blind reviewed by at least three reviewers consisting of guest editors and qualified external reviewers. 2. Scanning the special issue The first paper entitled ‘‘A remote control and media-sharing system using smart devices’’ by Shou-Chih Lo, Ti-Hsin Yu, ChihCheng Tseng [1] presents a design and implementation of an integrated service architecture that supports the remote control of home appliances and the sharing of digital media between indoor and outdoor devices. The proposed design follows standards related to digital homes, and this study presents the details of its hardware and software components. The proposed system has the following distinguishing features: (1) it removes the restriction of media sharing among only indoor Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) devices. The proposed system allows mobile phones to access this service regardless of whether they are in the home. (2) The home appliances without automatic control and networking capability can also be integrated with this platform when they are equipped with a simple control board. (3) The proposed system is based on an open-source software stack, existing equipment, and inexpensive hardware. (4) Various home services can be easily integrated into the proposed service platform. In the second paper entitled ‘‘Journaling deduplication with invalidation scheme for flash storage-based smart systems’’ [2], Seung-Ho Lim and Young-Sik Jeong propose a simple and efficient invalidation scheme for multiple copies of data in a common

journaling module. They identify two types of duplications: (1) an explicit duplication of the journal region and original region with the same data. (2) An implicit duplication of transaction commits operations. The invalidation of duplicated data reduces write and erase operations and garbage collection overhead for the flash device, which would otherwise increases external I/O bandwidth. They conclude that the overall performance improves by roughly 5–35% during their experiments. The third paper entitled ‘‘Design and implementation of the WIPI-to-Android automatic mobile game converter for the contents compatibility in the heterogeneous mobile OS’’ [3] by Yang Sun Lee and Yun Sik Son presents a WIPI-to-Android automatic mobile game converter as a means to solve the problems of heterogeneous mobile OS platforms. With the recent appearance of smart phones, the mobile game market has dramatically grown, and game content has become killer content in the mobile market. However, because mobile communication companies have different mobile OSs and platforms with own programming language and development environment, mobile game developers must create content designed specifically for each platform or convert to provide game content to consumers. The proposed converter offers a means to solve the problems of heterogeneous mobile OS platforms. It can ensure quick and automatic conversion of existing WIPI game content into game content for the Android smart phone platform, thus it increases the reusability of existing content and provides smart phone users with more diverse content. In addition, the time and expense required throughout the development and conversion processes in order to provide game content designed for the WIPI feature phone platform on the Android smart phone platform can be significantly reduced. In the last paper entitled ‘‘A prediction and auto-execution system of smartphone application services based on user contextawareness’’ [4], Meeyeon Lee, Changgyu Bak, and Jung-Won Lee propose a system to predict smartphone applications based on inferring user context. Smartphones have emerged as suitable environments for user context-awareness and intelligent service provision. However, the existing works through the three steps process (log collection, context inference, and service provision) did not consider smartphone applications as the target service. Various application services on smartphones are still used by users’ own decision and manual controls. In this research, authors define a mobile context model with a new level of context and its inference method to perceive users’ intention or purpose related to the application usage. The proposed system provides the autonomous management of smartphone applications, so it can improve the usage of application by helping users who often miss the appropriate moment for executing or do not know which applications will be useful in the context.
