Society for Airway Management

It is gratifying to continue the alliance between the Society for Airway Management (SAM) and our official journal, the Journal of Clinical Anesthesia (JCA). SAM, an international organization of airway enthusiasts and experts, is now in its 20th year since its inception. It continues to grow in size, both geographically and numerically. We are almost 700-member strong and are represented in 27 countries. SAM members belong to specialties such as anesthesiology, critical care, emergency medicine, otolaryngology, and pulmonology with a common interest in fostering safe airway management through education, research, and hands-on training. Each year, SAM holds its annual scientific meeting in September. In 2014, the meeting took place in Seattle, was chaired by Dr. Valerie Armstead (Cooper University Health Care System, New Jersey), and co-chaired by Dr. Felipe Urdaneta (University of Florida, Gainsville). Dr. Lorraine Foley (Winchester, Massachusetts), as the Chair of the Annual Meeting Planning Committee, helped guide the planning process resulting in a very successful conference. The theme of the conference was Current and Future Trends in Airway Management. The registrants and speakers for the meeting spanned the globe and were from 19 countries. The meeting format included a plenary session, expert round http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jclinane.2015.01.001 0952-8180/© 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

tables, interactive pro-con debates using an audience response system, oral abstract presentations, lectures, professor poster rounds, hands-on airway workshops, and simulation workshops. Ample opportunity to interact with product inventors and vendor sponsors was provided throughout the meeting. On the day prior to the meeting, Dr. William Rosenblatt (Yale University) offered an enjoyable and productive Airway on Demand satellite course with lectures and workshop. Dr. Ankie Hamaekers (Maastricht University, The Netherlands) helped with the distribution of submitted abstracts to a panel of blinded judges. The top six abstracts were presented during the oral abstract session and are being published in this edition of the JCA. The top three abstracts were awarded prizes during the meeting. The oral abstract session was moderated by Dr. David Wong (University of Toronto, Canada) and Dr. Sim Jagannathan (Northwestern University, Chicago). The airway and simulation workshops were moderated by Dr. Lauren Berkow (Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore), Dr. Joseph Quinlan (University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh), and Dr. Ashutosh Wali (Baylor College of Medicine, Houston). Inventors of various airway devices and techniques comprised some of the faculty instructors. In 2015, SAM and the Difficult Airway Society (DAS) are organizing the first World Airway Management Meeting (www.wamm2015.com, bhttp://www.wamm2015.comN) to be held in Dublin, Ireland from November 12–14, 2015. This conference will be in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of both, SAM and DAS, in lieu of their respective annual meetings. Dr. Elizabeth Behringer (Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles), Past President of SAM and Dr. Ellen O’Sullivan (St. James Hospital, Dublin, Ireland), Past President of DAS will co-chair the meeting. The meeting will be held at the Convention Centre, Dublin. WAMM is the first collaborative global airway management meeting of international airway management experts aimed at an international multidisciplinary audience. The mission of this conference is to promote worldwide collaboration towards advancement, excellence, and safety in airway management. The 2016 SAM annual scientific meeting and workshops will be chaired by Dr. Felipe Urdaneta and will be held in

Abstracts from SAMS Atlanta, Georgia on September 15–18. The Co-Chair for the meeting will be Dr. Robert Naruse (Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles). The theme of the conference will be Innovation, Safety, and Technology in Airway Management.
