Pediatric Nursing: Celebrating the Past, Preparing for the Future The planning for the annual national conference started out simple enough. We decided early on that our thirteenth year as a society should be celebrated. It seemed developmentally appropriate: a thirteenth birthday party. Ideas for this celebration included non-latex balloons, a cake, maybe a theme of health concerns for adolescence. As we planned a birthday party, we started sharing stories of how we had begun as a society. We remembered the women whose vision of pediatric nursing included a society where there would be dialogue between the writers and the readers, the teachers and the students, the researchers and those whose practice would include the evidence of research. We listed for ourselves each of the women who had stepped outside their busy leadership, education, research, practice lives and gave of themselves so that all pediatric nurses could have the benefit of their work, experience and knowledge. “Who’s Who” in pediatric nursing. How in the world would we ever assemble thirteen years worth of stellar pediatric nurse leadership in one place for one conference? The answer turned out too easy; we asked them and they said yes. The result is outlined below.
Pre-conference workshops Developmental Disabilities in Children This workshop will include discussions of assessment of children for developmental disabilities, sibling issues, the role of the pediatric nurse in early intervention, and strategies for transitioning youth with special health care needs to adulthood, including addressing their healthcare needs. Integrated Healing Modalities for Children Participants of this workshop will “step-out of the box” to examine naturopathic remedies including botanicals, nutrition, acupuncture, music therapy, and utilization of imagery, spirituality, reflexology and positive thinking for healing. “How-To’s” of Teaching The “How-To’s” of Teaching is a half-day workshop, which will address setting achievable objectives, developing content, and evaluating student learning. This session is presented by Nancy DeBasio, PhD, RN representing the National League of Nursing, and will provide an opportunity for pediatric nurses to develop knowledge and skill in elements of the faculty role.

with us. Margaret Miles, PhD, RN, FAAN, renowned nurse researcher and the first President of SPN, will give us her thoughts about pediatric research. Patricia Benner, PhD, RN, FRCN, FAAN, author and nurse educator, widely known for her work on “Novice-to-Expert”, will give us her ideas on the nursing shortage. Marion Broome, PhD, RN, FAAN, honored researcher, author and former President of SPN, will speak to us about health literacy and its effects on children’s health. Judith Vessey, PhD, MBA, CRNP, FAAN, famous for her work and writing in chronic care, will remind us of the history of pediatric nursing. Janice Selekman, DNSc, RN, former Vice President of SPN, noted author on adolescent high-risk behaviors, will talk to us about the mental health of children. Cecily Betz, PhD, RN, FAAN, editor of the SPN journal and national spokesperson for pediatric nursing, will provide an update on the national program Healthy Children 2010. The concurrent sessions afford a wide variety of topics, and should appeal to the interest of many, from new nurse to advanced practitioner. Virginia Maikler, PhD, RN, former Board member, distinguished researcher and educator in pediatric nursing, will enlighten us about current issues surrounding chronic pain in children. Roxie Foster, PhD, RN, outstanding editor and practitioner will share her expertise in managing difficult pain assessment issues. Judy Beyer, PhD, RN, established researcher, known for her development of the Oucher pain assessment tool, will present on the challenges of conducting clinical research with children. Veronica Feeg, PhD, RN, FAAN, noted editor and educator, will discuss techniques to help parents make difficult decisions. Mary Perkins, DNSc, RN, former president of SPN, and Dana Nicholson, MBA, MS, RN, current Board member, and each an eminent nurse executive, will be sharing their leadership ideas with us. Barbara Woodring, EdD, RN, former Board member and prominent educator is planning a session examining the models we use to teach clinical pediatrics. Vicky Bowden, DNSc, RN, past President of SPN and noted editor, author, and chairperson of the SPN End-of-Life Taskforce will share current issues and discuss SPN’s advocacy role in end of life issues in children. Mary Fran Hazinski, MSN, RN, FAAN, former Vice President of SPN, well-known speaker, editor and a key-nursing representative to the Emergency Care Committee of the American Heart Association will update us on current controversies in pediatric resuscitation.

Networking and Roundtable Opportunities The above is merely a small sample of the once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to interact with some of the finest leaders that pediatric nursing has to offer and affords you the opportunity to network with many other dedicated pediatric professionals. Roundtable discussions will provide a more informal mechanism to network and problem solve selected topics. Roundtable topics include: schools/ daycare, ambulatory care, strategies for getting published, end-of-life care, nurse education, magnet hospitals, management/ administration and safety and injury prevention. The Celebrations!! And then there are the parties. We will, for the first time ever, be hosting a reception to honor those who had the vision and the generosity of spirit and time to not only found SPN, but to volunteer as Board members, committee chairs and members, speakers, and most importantly, Chapter Board members. Gowned up in your best dress or black tie, come meet and celebrate these extraordinary women and all that they have given to each of us and our profession. The party will continue throughout the conference with our awards banquet taking on the enhancement of a special birthday bash. How Can You Help SPN Celebrate? We are asking your help to make this conference the success SPN’s 13th birthday deserves. We ask that each of you “adopt” a non Children’s hospital to personally deliver conference brochures to and invite their pediatric nurses to the conference. Many of our members are affiliated with Children’s hospitals; we need to spread the word to pediatric nurses beyond that arena. Taking an adage from The Field of Dreams, “If you build it, they will come.” We have, each of us, built SPN into what it is today. April 3-6, 2003, in Kansas City is our time to celebrate this phenomenal accomplishment. See you in Kansas City!!
