Soil Dynamics S. Prakash McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1981,426 pp, ISBN 07 050658 2 The teaching of different aspects of dynamic behaviour of softs has till now been done with the help of research material which is scattered among a large number of technical journals. Thus, there was a great need to compile material into a basic text on soil dynamics, which may serve as a starting point for serious studies of this subject. This objective has been kept in view in planning the present text. The text describes the state-of-art on the subject at the time of final compilation as well as provides a basic insight to the reader for whom it may be the first exposure to soil dynamics.

ConstRutive Equations for Engineering Materials, Vol. 1: Elasticity and Modelling

W. F. Chert and A. F. Saleeb John Wiley, Chichester, 1982, 475pp, $66.45/£36.95, ISBN 0471 09149 9 A discussion of the latest developments in finite element methods and computer procedure in elasticity. It provides the necessary foundations of the theory of elasticity and plasticity, and reports recent results in the development of constitutive models for metals, concrete, and soft, their numerical implementation to a computer program, as well as some finite element solutions. It includes end-of-chapter problems for both student and practitioner.

An expanded version of the classic French book on carbonate deposits, covering the basic concepts of environmental interpretation, creation and destruction of porosity in carbonates, and the occurrence of reservoirs in carbonate sequences. Twelve examples provide interpretations of carbonate sequences containing important reservoirs or those that have goat reservoir potential. Soil Mechanics- Transient and Cyclic Loads: Constitutive

Relations and Numerical Treatment Edited by G. N. Pande and O. C. Zienkiewicz John Wiley, Chichester, 1982, 624pp, $79.20/£33.00, ISBN 0471 10046 3 This book represents the most up to date research into soil mechanics for transient and cyclic loads. In recent years particular attention has had to be paid to the problems relating to the response of foundations of structures to dynamic loading such as that caused by earthquakes or to slower cyclic loading experienced by marine and off-shore structures subject to wave action. Consequently, the experimental and theoretical research currently going on in this area is enormous. The idea for this book was formed at the International Symposium on Soils under Cyclic and Transient Loading held in Swansea in January 1980. At this Symposium the idea arose of grouping together the theories of particularly important work and elaborating these on a more permanent platform. This book, written by some of the world's leading researchers, also throws some light on applications in engineering practice. It is aimed both at researchers in soft mechanics and professional engineers including designers and consultants.
