Abstract-In this note, we treat a two-dimensional moving boudary value problem by a complex differential equation. We obtain an estimate on the C” norm of the moving boundary.

1. INTRODUCTION This paper is devoted to the following complex differential equation:

for < E A, the unit disk.

f(CT0) = f(C)

This equation was used in [l] by Richardson to describe the solution of a two-dimensional moving boundary value problem. Under the restrictive assumption that f(., 0) is analytic and univalent in a neighbourhood of the unit disk, Vinogadov and Kufarev [2] proved the existence of a solution of (1.1). In 1984, a simpler proof of existence in some special cases was given by Gustafsson [3]. The main result of this paper is the following. THEOREM

1.1. Suppose of the unit disk,

f (.) is analytic in a neighborhood

f(.> 0) E C’@(A), Ifc(.)l > 6 > 0 for C E 6. Then problem (1.1) has exactly one solution in A x [0, T], where T is a sufficiently small positive number. There are constants Cl independent of f and CZ depending on f (. , 0) such that llf(.,

t)ll&z I a

c1t

+ c2.

The second statement of the theorem gives a quantitative description of the moving boundary, which is lacking in the references. 2. PROOF

OF THEOREM

1.1

In the following proof of Theorem 1.1, we use u([, t) to denote $$(<, t) and p(u)(C, t) to denote & Jaa hz3F, which is the Poisson integral of l/lu12. In terms of 21and p(u), (1.1) can be easily reiormulated as: W - (CUP(U))< = 0,

‘1LlkO = uo, where 210= f<(C). The proof of Theorem 1.1 relies heavily on the following.

On dA, &p(u) = l/luj2. We also know @Rep) = 0, a8(l/lu12) L 0, in A. Hence, inA, aa(l/l~l~ - Ftep(u)) 2 0, which implies, by maximum principle, 1/lu12 - Rep(u) 5 0, i.e., lU12hP(U) 2 1. Therefore, we get

This proves the proposition. It follows that if u is a solution of (2.1), then u(., t) E H2, the Hardy space with power 2. PROOF OF THEOREM 1.1. (1) This is done in [2]. (2) Since f(0, t) = 0 we know, if
