This paper described work carried out on clinical equine cases admitted to the School of Veterinary Science for anaesthesia and surgery. The aim of the study was to investigate the metabolic and hormonal responses to anaesthesia and elective surgery in the healthy horse.
It
was envisaged that with this background knowledge, the anaesthetic management of horses with gastro-intestinal obstruction and severe preexisting metabolic abnormalities which require emergency laparotomy, could be improved. This work will be published in detail elsewhere.
