SOPHOS LAUNCHES RSA TOOLKIT

Sophos, the Oxford data security specialists, have announced a powerful tool for application programmers and system designers who need to incorporate highly secure encryption into their communication software without incurring expensive development time. The toolkit consists of a self-contained set of functions needed to encrypt data using the highly secure Public Key 512-bit RSA algorithm. RSA Public Key encryption eliminates most key management problems associated with standard encryption methods. The security of the RSA algorithm relies on the mathematical difficulty of separating a very large number (154 decimal digits) into its prime factors. (The fastest computer available today would take typically 90 000 years to do this and crack the encryption). The toolkit provides not only full 512-bit exponentiation and modulus arithmetic, but also all essential functions for primality testing and key-pair generation. Prior to this release, the RSA toolkit has been in use for over a year as the kernel of Sophos' PUBLIC communications security system. Programmers can now use the RSA toolkit in conjunction with Sophos' existing DES toolkit (Data Encryption Standard), to incorporate digital signature techniques into their applications. The software is available for MS-DOS, VAX/VMS, SUN-3 UNIX, and IBM-RT UNIX, and consists of a relocatable object module with routines callable from languages like Fortran, Pascal, C, Cobol, etc. The RSA toolkit is simply included into the application at link time. No royalties are payable on duplication of programs incorporating the RSA toolkit. The price is f15 000 plus VAT, including documentation and media. ICL PROVIDES OPERATING SYSTEM SECURITY OPTION

Dr Peter Lammer, Sophos Ltd, OX5 lEZ, UK; tel: 0865-853668;

There are currently no mandatory computer security standards for general-purpose commercial systems in the UK. Major computer manufacturers do offer security options, which are not necessarily safe against the "authorized insider" reckoned to be the main threat. UK computer manufacturer ICL has launched a "High Security Option" for the VME operating system used by its Series 39 mainframes. The security option, developed as a result of collaboration with accountants Deloittes, Haskins and Sells, offers a "mandatory" operating system, controlling all forms of change, even to user applications.
